Have you ever done a 1/4 in an old GTO or a new Corvette? It might not sound fun at first. But wait until you do it (or you might have already, i'm assuming you haven't ). It's VERY fun and exhilerating. Lay down the pedal to the metal, shift gears at redline, laying rubber down in 1st and 2nd gear when you shift. The finish line coming at you ever so fast. Pinned back agiasnt the seat with your brain agaisnt your skull and listening to the rumble of that big block V-8 lovin under the hood happily eating up the track.... Now that's fun.

I must say though that racing around curvy roads is very exhilerating also

Crap didn't realize this was a 3 page thread, my post was for RedDawn about saying that running a 1/4 isn't fun even in a nice american street rod.

<< Most of the people on this board seem to be ignorant "anti-ricers" when they have absolutely no clue what they're talking about. We have people on this board (Ornery) calling new Corollas "factory-rice". The Civic raced the Ferrari and won. The Civic owner and other "ricers" are NOT trying to prove that a Civic is better than a Ferrari. Most of us do understand that there is a lot more to a car than straight-line speed. Interesting, that's why most "ricers" buy their Civic Si ($18k) or Integra Type-R ($25k) or even now the S2000 ($32k)...because there is more to a car than straight-line speed. They could easily afford a Mustang GT or Camaro Z28 for the same price or even less. However, these "ricers" buy Hondas because they are better cars. Better build quality, better interior, more reliable engines, good fuel economy. There is also a huge community for those with these cars. There is a strong sense of pride in having a Civic or Integra and to always be making your car better in speed, handling, or aesthetics that this board does not seem to understand, and that is ironic because owning and modifying a Civic is EXACTLY like what this board does with computers. You guys all love your overclocked Celerons past 1 GHz, and 60 FPS @ 1600x1200, smoking $4000 Gateways left and right in the benchmarks. Well, "ricers" like to challenge themselves, building up 4 bangers to out-perform more expensive and more powerful sports cars in every way. And for it, they get picked on by the muscle car community.

And by the way --- If I was lucky enough to own a Ferrari, I sure as hell would also have a few Civics, Integras, and S2000s in my garage to work on. Because those would be my creations, the Ferrari never would be.

What makes them a better car? Show me some facts. Quit pulling stuff out of your ass.

Take pride in owning a Civic or Integra? Now that is wrong.....

Better build quality? Maybe not better but almost all car manufacturers are about dead even in build quality.

I would rather take a used mustang or camaro than 10 new civics or 10 new integras....

Ness, the top speed of a Integra Type-R is 200 mph? Now I would love to see that.... Engine would have to be pushing 20,000rpm..lol...

Heh I know the top speed isn't 200MPH, that's a joke left over from the days of Lozer.

Red Dawn, for the record I'm 17. Also, the days of the muscle car are over. Time to move over for the new "how do you get 250HP from a 1.8 liter engine" 9,000RPM redline rice cars.

Supporting the money thing, the original version of the 78 Mazda RX-7 generation 1, similar to the 1985 I still have, 75 % restored, placed 3rd overall and 1st in it's class in the 24 hours of Daytona it's first year of introduction, losing only to the Porsche 9**'s series. It crushed Vettes, Jaguars, Ferrari's and many other cars far more exotic and with race bred heritages. The very next year the governing body of racing, sanctioned modifications to those RX-7's that made the races more competitive and over the next decade, the RX-7 made Mazda the winningest manufacturer on the planet.

The car I have pulls .88g on a skidpad(stock). An anti-sway bay is relatively inexpensive and can be put on a Civic just as easily. I could buy an anti-sway bar kit for my car for under $ 1,000 that would make it handle with any VR rated sportscar. Lowering the cars suspension and adding stiffer shocks and coil springs doesn't cost much either in the grand comparison to the cost of a Ferrari. I dare say that I could take equal amounts of money for both vehicles and build a Civic that would beat the Ferrari all day long, anywhere you want to run it and still send a kid thru college and buy a home and garage. Same goes for any Mustang, or Corvette, although I'd probably have to use the savings differential to choose between sending the kid to college or a downpayment on the house and garage.. Another thing to consider is the front-wheel drive of the Civic vs the rear wheel driven Ferrari. FWD's have better traction.

As for better built quality between Jap cars and American cars, the gap is narrower, but the Japanese cars still have an edge. I've owned both and I have yet to find an American car that holds up for mechanical durability based upon replacement of components that are supposed to last the life of the vehicle or for what I would consider to be at least a 100,000 mile part. My RX-7 has 235,000 miles on it and burns less oil than the Ranger I have. This is significant since the RX-7 actually uses the oil to be injected with the fuel mixture and aids in lubricating and cooling the tiny 1146 cc Rotary Engine. BTW, this tiny engine achieves 100 hp per litre by normal aspiration(no turbo or supercharger-stock). By the same token, the 385 hp Mustang quoted earlier uses at least the 4.6 L V-8, which litre for litre is not as potent. By the same token, I can get a stock twin turbo 1.3 L 1996 RX-7 R2 @ 255 hp and beat that Mustang all day long in 0-60, and quarter mile runs. Pick a road course and your 2001 Ford Mustang would be absent from the rear view mirror of the Mazda after the first or second turn. About a year ago, I could get a low mileage 96 RX-7 R2 for about $ 12,000 (US).

RedDawn, half your links are labeled incorrectly....High, "My name is Shelby and I make the Rice Burners my Bitch" When you click on the link it takes you to a 1970 Mach I, which is no Shelby.

Im da boss....is not a boss mustang, it might be the boss of the road but not a Boss mustang. Call me picky on that one but thats just me....

On a sad note, half of those cars, except the 65 Shelby Cobra and the Shelby GT500 would get smacked around today in 0-60 and 1/4 mile. But I would MUCH rather have on of them than any other car we have been talking about

RX7 beating a 2001 SVT Mustang Cobra R? I would have to see it to believe it...

And the muscle car era is not gone all together. We now have the 2001 SVT Mustang Cobra R (5.4L V-8, 385HP, 0-60 in 4.8, and 13.0/108.5 1/4 mile).

The 2001 Corvette Z06 (5.7L, V-8, 385HP, 0-60 in 4.3, and 12.6/112.4 1/4 mile).

Also the Dodge Viper GTS (8.0L V-10, 450HP, 0-60 in 4.1, and 12.2/119.8 1/4 mile).

Those are some really nice cars, and all muscle. And I didn't even mention the Camaro SS with 320 HP 5.7L V-8, or the Pontiac Trans Am WS6 with the same 5.7L 320 HP V-8. The muscle car era is still here, just not as profound or competitive as it used to be....

PS. All 0-60 times and 1/4 tests were on perfect conditions, may vary from test to test.

ROFL red dawg. That's true I mean if you put enough money into anything you can beat another car. If you have money and time then you can do pretty much whatever you want to do.

After reading the data on the 2001 Cobra SVT R and the Cobra SVT @ their website, I do have to admit/agree the 96 RX-7 probably wouldn't take the "R". The information(Motor Trend) I had was that a 93 RX-7 R1 US (no longer made for Import) version runs a 5.0 second 0-60 and 13.5 second 1/4 mile and gets a .98 g skidpad rating, so with these numbers it does edge out the Cobra SVT and is very close to beating the "R". I will do further research to find out whether today's current Japanese version improves the RX-7's position against a car that has 4.15 times the displacement. The most recent data indicates the 99 RX-7 having 280 hp and improved handling, although the website didn't elaborate on exact performance numbers.

As for Red Dawn, comparing an RX-7 and Mustang (cockroach and horse in your analogy) is absurd. Now that you have the numbers for a 93 RX-7 and 2001 Mustang SVT and SVT R, it's equally ridiculous to acknowledge that the Japanese were building a sports car 8 years ago that gets pride of Ford performance in 2001 with less than a quarter of the engine displacement. As far as driver comfort levels and interior details, these are both probably similar, unless Ford stuck their sound system in the Mustang. I know that the RX-7 was a sport leather package with a built in Bose wave sound system.
