Blue state navy..Virginia,Hawaii,California,Florida,CT,?

Red state Navy..?

Blue state Air Force..California, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia ?

Red state air force..Texas National guard, ?

Blue state allies-NATO, Japan, Israel, India, ?

Red state allies- ?

Yes but the real question is where are the military personnel at those bases from and which side would they pick? You have to remember the military tends to lean heavily to the right and just because a bunch of soldiers are stationed in CA doesn't mean they will fight for that state.

Just need to convince the US Joint Chiefs of Staff that certain powers that be are violating the Constitution and that there is a need to defend it against enemies, foreign and domestic.

Uh, show me the history of traiterous US soldiers ?

And I don't believe its true the active military leans "heavily" to the right. Prove it.

And they wouldn't be fighting for any state just because they were based there.

of course this whole thing is a silly discussion

What do you mean traitor? The last North/South war, the South soldiers that were part of the military pre-breakup just left and went South. They weren't traitors, they were patriots for their state/cause.

And, Yes, the US military overwhelmingly leans right.

Yes, this is a silly discussion...things have got no where close to a point where this will become a reality.

The US military does not overwhelmingly lean to the right. If you think that's wrong prove it.

They do overwhelmingly support the Constitution.

I don't think your correct about the US military in the civil war era. I've never heard of masses of US soldiers becoming Confederates, so tell me more about that.

Depends on what you mean. First term enlistees are a pretty good mixup of all kinds of people. In general they are fairly liberal.

Career people tend to be very conservative.

More importantly people don't view themselves as citizens of states anymore, they view themselves as US citizens. I believe a breakaway faction would attract very limited real support.

You ever look at the command of the confederate forces? Littered with west point grads or commanders who served active duty in the United States army before the war.

You gotta love all the anti USA talk here, true patriots indeed! If you don't like the system then destroy it when it doesn't work in your favor.
Questioning your government is one thing talking about killing other Americans because they have a different view point than you? Pathetic and unamerican. Talking about seceding because you don't like the direction the country is going? Yeah more patriotism there /s

If you aren't going to respect this country and it's majority rule through the good and bad then get the fuck out!

And you call yourself an American? Fuck you!

My point is first of all its an assumption that the US military leans to the right.

Its also un-American to even think of the military that way, the people and the military are one and the same, if we elect GW Bush so be it, if we elect Obama, so be it.

Nice WT opinion piece, haha.

The blue states collectively have a ton more money and population than the red ones. Its just a fact.

It always does strike me as odd how some southerners are itching for a fight considering how badly they were demolished last time.

Funny seeing as the new south is made up of many former tax paying northerners like myself.

Giddy? Who are you talking about? I'm all for letting you go if you want to leave, you just might find things aren't as nice as you thought they would be without all that blue state money coming your way.

We wouldn't need blue state money as we wouldn't be mandated to spend it the blue state way anymore. Not too mention that the bulk of domestic energy production in raw material - oil and natural gas comes from the red states and some borderline blue state.

So ? Of course I know that. We are talking about soldiers, not commanders.

What's the historical evidence for US soldiers betraying their oaths, en masse ? What's the evidence for active duty US commanders turning their US soldiers against the US ?

Sure you wouldn't. Enjoy some serious economic contraction!

Just talk. I would be surprised you can get 5% support in any state to secede.

A civil war wouldn't be Blue vs Red, it would be USA vs Rebels.

Contraction? I suggest you look at the number of companies who have relocated to the south. Foreign companies who open up manufacturing facilities here open them where? In the south.

I know what your point is... that the welfare and public assistance that MS, AL and SC spend today "Stimulates" the local economy. True to a degree... That doesn't mean there wouldn't be any assistance, but there would be an end to lifer style assistance.

I think we'd do just fine... Especially in stealing even more businesses from the former blue states.

I think people who indicate "yeah, we will break up and have a civil war and it will be great for us economically!" lack the realization that something that businesses tend to like is stability. Revolutions, warfare where you want to run a business, etc usually is not so good for stability.

Irrational? 12,000+ homicides a year (per capita, many hundreds of percent higher than any other western, first-world nation), 14,000+ suicides, and twice the number of accidental killings compared to legitimate/self defense, what's there to feel irrational about?

But NOO, guns are great. More guns to everyone, everywhere! That will fix all problems! Just shoot away.

Yes, guns control your mind and make good people turn into bad people. And if you keep good people from having guns the bad people won't shoot anyone anymore. Ban guns! That will fix all problems! Criminals will follow the law and get rid of theirs too.

At the time of the Civil War (1861) the United States was very homogenous in terms of race, religion and ideology. By in large, Americans were conservative, White Protestants.
-snip-

I think you're understating the cultural differences at that time.

Yes, a lot of "white people", but their religions were different as well as their culture. Add to that the historical and long simmering resentment between the English and Scottish.

English were in the North, the Scottish types in the South. French were also in the South, and they didn't like the English either.

We started feuding shortly after the adoption of the Constitution - the Whiskey tax rebellion. The southern colonies were all strongly opposed to it.

Distilling whiskey was a practice largely brought over here by the Scottish. I.e., the South was primarily hammered by the tax.
