Way to ruin a perfectly good thread with rationality

But while we are being rational... All this country really needs is to ban filibusters. As it stands, if one party has even marginal control of either house of congress they can essentially give everyone the finger and refuse to play ball at all. If everyone had to accept frequent compromises (and the occasional defeat) shit might actually get done, and we wouldn't even have to wait for an entire generation to die off.

How would this lead to civil war? R vs D obviously have certain tax biases but the rich aren't going to secretly fund a civil war for lower tax rates when they could just leave the country, and the poor aren't poor enough to start any serious political dissent.

At the time of the Civil War (1861) the United States was very homogenous in terms of race, religion and ideology. By in large, Americans were conservative, White Protestants. However, the political, social and economic influence of slavery was enough to start the war.

None of the things listed by OP even remotely approach the toxic effect that slavery had to a democratic nation. My only reasonable conclusion is that the the OP has no understanding of the causes of the ACW and therefore has drawn this false comparison.

Obviously, I am against war.

On the other hand, from a historical perspective, nations are a relatively recent phenomena. Nothing indicates that they will last forever.

I don't understand why so many people keep bitterly clinging to their nations.

After all, its possible that by breaking into smaller governmental units, we will all win.
