It's an awesome game, especially if you can play with friends. There are some aspects of it I don't like, but it's worth buying.

god damn this thread, I'm installing Civ 4 right now.

Sims 3 got pretty boring rather quickly, though I've still got to figure out how to get a sim to move in with me so I can start a family and I've only planted 78% of plants (don't know what I'm still missing... I've gotten the life tree, death flower, 2 x money trees, egg tree, and cheese tree)

Civ 4 is amazing. I recommend that you get it, the two expansions, and the spin-off.

did the expansions actually add anything noteworthy? I remember seeing a couple Civ3 expansions, but they just threw in stuff I had no interest in like scenarios and multiplayer.

yes. Very much so. Plus there's all the damned user mods too... ugh...
STOP IT PEOPLE. I WILL NOT INSTALL!!!! ITS SUMMER!!!! I HAVE A WIFE AND CHILDREN AND A JOB!!!!

Name important cities after loved ones. That's about as much interaction and closeness you can hope for once those marathon Civ sessions kick in.

The BTS expansion is the only Civ expansion I've really liked. (Alien Crossfire for Alpha Centauri was pretty good too.)

I agree. 1 was fantastic and is hard to rate as it was still complex, but a simplified version of 2. 2 is still the best balance of added complexity yet simplified play, but 4 adds a lot to the series and comes out as best overall.

I hated 3 for its' over-the-top AI Cheating(impossibly high number of Units) and the freakking time the AI took to Move all those Units(usually the same way for each type). Towards the end of a game you could literally go eat dinner in between turns.

The ability to have armies in Civ4 is what made it more wortwhile to me. the absurd amount of enemy AI in Civ 3 and then having to invidiaully move each of your own units was ridiculous.

The last I played Civ 3 was Civ 3 Complete so I'm not sure if all versions allowed it, but you could move all of your units on the same tile or all of your units of the same type on the same tile as a stack. You could even attack using the stack command.

The enemy AI did like to build a lot of units, but it rarely upgraded those units so I really never found that to be a problem.

What I liked most about Civilization 3 was the built in game editor that allowed you to change the rules of the game so it worked the way you wanted it to and even allowed you to edit units or create new units. I replaced the standard rules of the game with a set I made so that every time I played it used those rules.

Move stack was a godsend in Civ3:

J or X Key = move all units as a stack
Ctrl + J or X Key = move units of selected type as a stack

Ugh. Someone please tell me why I'm re-installing this time-sink. Sid Meier is like a dealer of digital heroine and we're all junkies living for the next turn.

got suckered into playing all day, but I hate the AI so much.

it's like every country hates me no matter what I do and I'm always at war so I never have time to really build up infrastructure.

Sorry to all those whose life I just ruined

How does it compare to Age of Empires 3? Cause I got that one for free.

I played the demo so I'm just trying to get the hang of the game.

think I'm playing the most ironic game ever.

the muslim country founded Judaism and America (me) has a permanent alliance with Russia.

just kicked the shit out of France, though. they declared war on me for no reason... it's funny to fight horses with tanks.

I hated the fact that they neffed the British empire in the expansions.
I spent more time on the 18civ maps than anything.

Start out as Elizabeth, build 3 cities on main and 1 on Scotland, form an alliance with Russia/Catherine, Invade France ASAP, then march straight to Rome. Conquer Spain and Germany.
Once I got Redcoats, I just marched entirely to the east killed Persia, India, and China. Backstabbed Russia.

Man...That was fun.

I remember trying the 18civ map using America and it was completely boring and uneventful.

Other than Fall from Heaven, which I'm downloading now and heard great things about, what are some other recommended Civ4 mods?

I just played the 18 civs map first time a couple day ago. I started out as Rome, beeline to Iron work and mass praetorian to conquers all my neighbor. Work out pretty good,
