I want to like this. I really, really do. But my anus still twitches when I think about Civilization 5.

After Civ Revolution or whatever that consolified crap was, and after what "they" said it would be and why they were doing...

I'm never gonna buy anything from them again.

So, Civ 5? Serves you right.

I think it will be awesome. I enjoyed Civ 5, especially after the Brave New World expansion.

It looks like it's using the base Civ 5 engine, like Alpha Centauri used the base Civ 2 engine. Hopefully they'll improve on it a bunch like with SMAC.

Sounds like a bunch of good ideas, the IGN article had some good info: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/04...auri-territory-with-civilization-beyond-earth

Because of the non-linear choices (in technology) you and your competitors will make based on your needs and overall strategy, and the intentional lack of technology trading, no faction will be able to unlock all the technologies in a single playthrough, and by the end of a game each faction should look and function very differently.

The DLC really fixed Civ 5. I got it for a song on Steam and have put 150+ hours into it. Great game

No it didn't and no it isn't. And my expectations for this new game are extremely low based on the failure that was Civ 5. Perhaps I'll be surprised but I'm not counting on it and certainly will not be pre-ordering it.

the tourism mechanic looks nice but otherwise much of the game looks like a mass produced money maker title

You are welcome to your opinion. I would suggest playing it though rather than just saying what it "looks like".

Anyway, Civ 5, whatever. Not interested in debating that again.

As far as this new game goes (the one that the thread is about), here's a PC Gamer interview. http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/04/12/c...-the-new-factions-aliens-technology-and-more/

What does that even mean. How can a video game be mass produced. And why would a company set out to make a game that wasn't a "money maker".

Well, reminds of how Colonization was redone.
Colonization was a bit limited in scope, which made replayability not so great.
That shouldn't be the issue with this.

If the mechanics are strong, it can be a good game, regardless of the engine. I hope they had a proper sit down though, and that this game will work.
I'm not really excited, given the current track record. X-COM was okay, but not great, because it's not easily moddable, Civ 5 with add-ons still isn't as good as Civ4BTS...we shall see.

X-Com was pretty damn awesome from a game design perspective, which is what really counts. Also, it was stable with no serious bugs from day 1.

lol @ anyone assuming this will be good just because it appears to share a setting and story with Alpha Centauri. I mean, if you like the new Civ games then fine, but the odds of this being similar to SMAC in more ways than aesthetics are low.

Yeah apparantly CivBE is being made by the same team that did CivV so expectations are pretty low. Who knows though, they could have managed to learn what went wrong and go back to what worked with previous games.

That's 99% of games these days. Blizzard used to make good games now they just make mass appeal games with a mtx system.

My main complaint with 5 was that it seemed they intentionally delayed some of the "core aspects" to later release them via expansion. The changes they made to the base game with hezes/stacking I'm happy with so don't mind those staying the same going forward.

I loved Civ V, 300+ hours into it. I never played any of the other Civs so I guess that's why I liked it so much? I'm really looking forward to this game.

Nah, playing the other Civ games doesn't mean you'd automatically hate Civ V.

I started with Civ 3 which quite a few Civ 2 fans hated to the bitter end. Then Civ IV came out and suddenly Civ 3 was the best Civ ever and Civ IV broke everything that made Civ great. After a couple expansions there were still stalwarts against it but most agreed the expansions made it a better game. Then Civ V came out and you could basically repeat the Civ IV story again.

There are some things Civ V does better than IV and some that are reverse but at this point it is just down to opinion on the various mechanics involved and claiming one is objectively better is a fool's game.

BE looks to be very heavily influenced by Civ V so if you didn't like Civ V then prepare to be disappointed it would seem. It isn't totally obvious but it seems like this is just a single planet you go to not multiple planets? Basically the sense of scale is the same as it was in Civ just with a hostile alien world instead of the usual earth bound objects.
