I spent so much time on this game last summer..... It is a really great game!

I enjoyed it too.. be certain to get the patch, fortify all and wake all are essencial if you dont want to hurt your hands.
I just borrowed a game called Alpha Centari from the library and I loved it so much, I'm looking for it on Ebay. Even though it preceded Civ3, it excelled in many of the options where Civ3 failed. (Create your own unit, government options, smarter and more flexable AI, better implementation of pollution, the list goes on.)

I still play Alpha more than I do Civ 3. Like crobusa said, there's so many options that the civilization series did not explore - true 3d terrain, the ability to have ocean bases, raise the sea floor to create more land, the distinct socio/political/economic/eco factions .. etc. And for those of you familar with it, there's no beating a planetbuster =D

I loved messing with the terrain of opposing factions in SMAC! (Like raising or lowering the elevation )
The helicopter was also very powerful--maybe TOO powerful!

This game sucks. It a terrible game if you have laundry to do, people to talk to, class to attend, relatives to visit, food to eat, girlfriends to call...cuz once you start you cannot stop. I have played it for an average of 4 hours per day over the last 4 months. I am in a 12 step program because of this game.

Do not buy this game if you want to do anything with your life more than playing CivIII.
