Sorry if this is a repost, it's pretty old but I didn't find any other posts related to Civ IV.
Gamespot.

Sounds good, looking forward to it.

whew, i thought they'd totally re-do the graphics to make it only run on super high end PC's.

i'm glad they didn't

It sounds promising but I'm a bit hesitant to get excited about it considering the let down Civ III was. And Civ IV wil basically be made by the same people

I thought civ III was a pretty good game actually, if not spectacular. Most of the changes in civ IV should drastically improve gameplay too.

The one thing that makes me angry is when my tank gets killed by a spearman or a freaking musketman! I understand that the game works through dice, but that's just ridiculous.

Civ 2 or Alpha Centauri.

I hope Civ 4 brings back some respect the Civ world commands from its earliest expeditions.

Probably feels the same way when a poker player with pocket Aces gets beat by 7-2 offsuit. So many factors come into play in the Civ combat system that, while your tank has a huge advantage, it's never a guarantee. Did the musketman have a defense terrain bonus? Fortification? Elite? Was the tank down to 1 HP? etc, etc.

I'd like to hear the reasons why those who prefer Civ2 do not like Civ3. I liked them both and thought there were some great changes in 3, and hoping the changes in 4 improve the game ever more.

The only thing I did not like about Civ3 was the corruption. But, the more I play, the more I deviate from the way I played Civ2. You can't play 3 the way you played 2. City placement has to be planned well. So does the Forbidden Palace.

I have a theory that those who hate Civ3 do so because they were very good at Civ2 and did not want to alter their playing style for Civ3.

Civ4 should make things even more interesting with the ability to bombard every unit in a stack, as well as religious influences, etc. Looking forward to it, and wondering just how much I'm going to have to alter my playing style again.

Alpha Centauri was a good game, forgot about it. Just hope it does not turn out to be another CiV III. They need to just take CiV 2, upgrade the graphics, and add all the features and things you could do that exists in SMAC.

I was done with Civilization after the 2nd one. The 3rd one sucked. SMAC was pretty good.

Quiet well said. Between the 2 games, the only problems were that the games always felt a little bit short, even with the largest maps and most nations/factions.

So in addition to what you said, Id propose putting the new RAM size standards to good use and making maps much larger.

Civ4 should make things even more interesting with the ability to bombard every unit in a stack

That was in SMAC and thats years old.

I just finished playing Civ3 after many tries by sending Space to the sky. It was tough game. I haven't play Civ and Civ2 before. I am looking forward to buy Civ4 when it comes out.

Before Civ I like SimCity but I am very terrible mayor trying to control the city.

They need a SMAC with updated graphics. Civ3 was ok, but the AI was retarded as hell.

I just reinstalled Civ III. Still pretty fun. I might go find a bargain bin version of Civ II just for kicks. I like Civ III, even though it does have some problems.

i played through civ1, civnet, civ2, both expansions, civ2 gold, then civ3 and both expansions (not to mention colonization and alpha centauri, where is colonization 2? )

each new version was undoubtedly superior to the last. i agree with the above poster who said people probably just couldnt adapt to civ3. the play styles between 2 and 3 are completely different, but imo they are far more challenging and much more realistic in emulating... a civilization. when i look back at how easy and simplistic civ2 was in comparison, i cant understand how you could prefer it (im not trying to say it wasnt an incredible game, at the time). every change i see from civ2 to 3 simply made the game have more depth, variety, and realism. the only thing i didnt like was that rivers no longer function as roads

when civ3 first came out and i first tried to play civ3 as i wouldve beaten civ2 on diety, i was getting owned on chieftan difficulty. as i got used to the game i began to appreciate the new facets of civilization management, and i just recently beat a game on demi-god

Civ3 was fun, it just required different approaches than Civ2. A lot of people stopped playing because it was different than Civ2.

For some reason, I think many people were either expecting and/or wanting Civ3 to be Civ2 with a graphical update, and got scared when it wasn't.

Undoubtably, I will be picking up Civ4.
