i played through civ1, civnet, civ2, both expansions, civ2 gold, then civ3 and both expansions (not to mention colonization and alpha centauri, where is colonization 2? )
each new version was undoubtedly superior to the last. i agree with the above poster who said people probably just couldnt adapt to civ3. the play styles between 2 and 3 are completely different, but imo they are far more challenging and much more realistic in emulating... a civilization. when i look back at how easy and simplistic civ2 was in comparison, i cant understand how you could prefer it (im not trying to say it wasnt an incredible game, at the time). every change i see from civ2 to 3 simply made the game have more depth, variety, and realism. the only thing i didnt like was that rivers no longer function as roads
when civ3 first came out and i first tried to play civ3 as i wouldve beaten civ2 on diety, i was getting owned on chieftan difficulty. as i got used to the game i began to appreciate the new facets of civilization management, and i just recently beat a game on demi-god
