Civilization V (5) - any good?

I've never been a fan of strategy games, but I got two Steam codes from a recent purchase at Newegg and thought I might try it.
The last game of this type I enjoyed was Age Of Empires II with the expansion packs. I think I enjoyed it because it was easy.
Anyone play it?

I was hoping it would be epic, but I did not get into it at all, which is the first time for any new release of a Civ game. Been playing since the original game way back when.

If you never played civ 4 or were overwhelmed by the complexity you will like Civ 5..

I've tried it several times, including after the latest patch. I think it is rather horrid actually. Some of the ideas are good but overall CIV IV is vastly superior.

They took out a lot of features from Civ IV + expansions. Hexes give the game a fresh feeling, however, world happiness and one unit per tile were a bad decision and are the biggest issues most people don't like about the game.

If you're not familiar with the Civ series, you probably won't know why the game isn't as good as it's predecessor and I would have to say go ahead and give the game a try. It's still fun to play and if you find yourself enjoying it enough and wanting more, then it's time to step up to Civ IV BTS. Beware, Civ IV has some pretty bad side effects, including addiction and sleep deprivation.

I've tried several times, but it just sucks compared to Civ IV. Play has been simplified too much for my taste. I'm a micro managing fiend and I like my Civ that way.

You might enjoy Civ V then because it's easy as well

I like everyone else here abhor it, it's the worst Civ in the history of the franchise. It's also a Turn Based Strategy game FYI, AoE is an RTS.

I loathed Civ 5, and will likely pass on any expansions until they are in a dirt cheap bundle. Kinda wish I could get my money back for the purchase of Civ 5. Didn't help that they released a stack of DLC before they released any patches to address the game's issues either.

Civ 5 and AoE II are not the same type of game.

I like it, but it's not up to the level that Civ 4 is after years of updates and expansions (shocking, I know).

The game has been out for 4 months, plenty of time for people to warm up to it. I don't see the opinion of civ fans changing. In fact, when I first bought it, I thought the game-play was quite fresh. Then after 2 games, I realized how flawed it actually is.

Just get CivIV + BTS off of steam, I'm sure its cheap. In a few months or so I'm sure there will be an expansion pack out that will fix all the problems with 5.

I've been with the series since the first game, but really started to love it and learn in the ins and outs of it in Civ 2, in 1996.

I couldn't stand Civ 5. I immediately noticed all the things inexplicably missing from it that were even in Civ 3. Little things, big things. It just felt like "Civ Lite", and I'm sad that Firaxis chose to go in that direction. Civ 2 stands as one of my top 5 PC games of all time.

On the bright side though, the bitter taste it left in my mouth allowed me to rediscover Paradox stategy games. Europa Universalis 3, Victoria 2, and others all got plenty of playtime in the months after Civ 5 came out and collected dust.

as someone new to the series with no preconceived notions of that it should or shouldnt be, i found it quite enjoyable. me and 3 friends all have it and have played multi a few times. its fun and still fairly deep. in my opinion, i dont think i'd want it any more complicated than it already is but everyone likes different things.

Even if that was true, when CivIV was released, patches were released to resolve issues. With 5, we get 4.99 DLC for extra Civs.

This is the market they were targeting, not their fan base. Those who were attracted to the console versions of Civilization, Revolutions, for example. Civilization fans are furious with Firaxis for basically ignoring them entirely. Many would have bought any product with the Civilization name attached to it. Don't think that's true any more.

I'm new to the entire Civ series, and played Civ5 nonstop once I picked it up recently. However... I haven't started a game since. The diplomacy AI is absolutely batty (Really, Aztecs, you want to insult my military force, when I own have the map and have 15x the armies?).

One of the biggest problem is that time FLIES. There's no feeling of being in any particular era. By the time you build a legionary and get it near an enemy city, it's time to upgrade to Laser Battle Hovertanks.

I have to say that after playing a lot of Civ2 and Civ4, I was quite disappointed with Civ5. There are definitely great features about Civ5 like hex spaces and one unit per space, but overall I thought the game was lacking compared to the previous iterations. Even the little nit-picky things like art direction and presentation was lacking (No Leonard Nimoy, boring mainscreen, boring soundtrack compared to Civ4).

I can see Civ5 being a really fun game for a person new to strategy games though. And speaking of which, I have an extra key for Civ5, so if anyone want to swap games.

I love how the devs tried to pass off the missing wonder movies as no big deal since we get 'living art' in its place that you'll never get bored of looking at.

With Civ IV though the complaints were geared toward bug issues, CTDs and not why can't I select all my units, why do I have to click right on this little icon instead of the whole thing, why can roll the AI on the higher difficulties, why does the AI always want war, why does it take 2 hours to produce 3 units, why, why, why!
