anyone try the game w/ the new patch?

I tried it but the all too common phrase comes into play: "you can polish a turd but it's still a turd". Civ 5 won't be fixed by a patch, an expansion maybe but a lot of old Civ players think only Civ 6 can fix things.

They tried to do too much with way too little beta testing and now they're trying to paper over the cracks.

well in that case, i hope they scrap what they're doing with civ5 and work on civ6.
maybe someone else should do it... maybe sid should take part in it for reals this time.

I've been playing Civ4 again since I bought the complete edition on Steam, but I've also been jumping back on Civ5 just to sort of do my own comparison.

The thing about Civ5 that seems to bother me the most besides all the faults you guys have listed, is that you pretty much cannot really achieve any other victory besides war. I tried a culture game, but the AI civs are so erratic in behavior. I was on good terms with everyone, and for a random reason, my friendliest Civ declared war on me, and I had no indication prior that he was pissed off at anything. It's just a start of a turn and bam, his military is surrounding my borders. WTF.

To reiterate, the AI is so freaking random, and their behavior is unpredictable and completely independent on what you do to be friends with them. I had a Civ denounced me at the start of a turn when in the previous turn I gave him some luxury resources...Another explanation would be that the AIs were programmed to be the biggest assholes.

LOL, these are EXACTLY the same comments people made when Civ IV came out

In what way was Civ IV dumbed-down with anything? If anything, it was criticized as being relatively unapproachable for non-Civ veterans. There was definitely criticisms, but a lot of those concerns were addressed pretty soon after the release. I admin that the game got a LOT better with the expansions, but the core game was still solid.

To me, Civ5 was bound to fail. It is hard to please hard-core fans who want to tweak everything and still be accessible to new fans (often to the entire genre). It is extremely hard to please both. Look how simple Civ I/II are by modern standards, but they were excellent games because they were still new and fresh back when they were released.

Bring back Soren Johnson!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTM7TT7bOUk

lol wait, oh Jon Shafer said there was only one programmer for Civilization 5:

"RPS: Even for the more recent Civilizations? There’s one guy doing the core of the programming?

JS: Yeah. The thing is, that’s always how Sid Meier’s done it. Firaxis is his company, and that’s just the model that we use. The games have been successful, and it’s the only way that we know."

In that youtube link Soren said like 5...

well, I finally picked up Civ 5 for 20 bucks two weeks ago. I played it for ~3 hours? haven't reloaded it yet...

this reminds me, I need to start up a new game of Elemental and get into the new updates. Should be a totally different game since October, right?
:hmm:

I'm quite suprised at Sid letting someone mess with the formula so drastically. I'm also surprised at how little (thus far) Firaxis has done to fix the game up. That being said, I just started playing again last week and am enjoying it.

I honestly (no disrespect) think Sid just sits in a rocking chair all day. The last time I saw him he had a controller in his hand. A CONTROLLER! I think he basically said I have had enough of this damn game, let someone else direct it from now on. Now he's done Civ Rev and Civ Facebook.

The other thing is for each new Civ they want to always add 3 new elements so you're going to see a different game each time it renews.

I'm trying it, I'm not getting that loving feeling yet that's been reported on the civfanatic forums. I'm not terribly deep into the game yet though

I think if I restart another game I'm totally leaving out city states, what a nuisance. They might not be so bad if they entered the game later as rebels or the results of civil wars, but they seem so impeding to game play.

Oh and that *!*@#*&^%$ opening movie now plays longer for me!

yeah, I think the main reason that I haven't picked up on the game I started (now 2 weeks ago), is that very early still, I eventually saved up and paid the minimum to get a nearby city state to "like me" (wtf is this FB shit?? ). The bar fills up a wee bit, I get a small trade benefit. Then, within 2 freaking turns, the bar is gone, they cease to like me. Fucking greedy ass bastards jsut want me to funnel all of my money to them? the first payment was half of the total money I had saved for maybe 30 turns...

then another nearby city state wants me to destroy another city state to gain favor. I was on my way to moving my forces in before I quit the game.

I don't know...the city state thing sounded really cool at first, but this mafia business just pisses me off.

Seems like it is missing a lot of depth this town around. It's almost as if the "end turn" button is not even needed. Too stream lined for me.

City States make the game not even fun for me, given the current situation with the game designs and bugs. You have to spend more time and resources to keep the City State happy, much more than what they're worth. On top of that, I keep facing this bug where it says that I'm trespassing on their territory even though we're allies, and I sent my units in to defend them against invaders.

I'm trying really hard to like Civ5 (I love the improved graphics and interface), but there are just too many broken elements to this game. On top of that, the pacing and progression is out of whack. I hit the Renaissance period without breaking a sweat.

Well I'm playing on quick (latest patch) and about 180 turns in at the Renaissance era. The game has definitely improved since launch. The fact that I'm this far into it without vomiting is proof

Production seems normal now and there's actually tile yields worthwhile. The buildings I've constructed have counted for something. I haven't noticed any slow downs on a large map yet, I only have 4 workers though. Overall the game is more engaging then before, I have actually continued to play a few more turns to see what happens.

I'm amazed to see the queen with a navy!

All the AIs I've encountered aren't so quick to war with me and have had successful luxury trades and research agreements with 4/6 of them. Surprisingly I've been able to play the fence trading with one AI who didn't like the other and vise versa without pissing the other off.

AI does get pissed off quick though, at least with Suleiman whom I was friendly toward and then went downhill in 2 turns after I asked him to stop building next to me. He asked me the same thing near the start of the game without any problems.

That said it's still dumbed down/"streamlined". No real feedback on what the AI is thinking and limited dialog. They haven't fixed the silly 'the people who like shiny things the most" lists. Unless I'm missing a screen or two I can't really tell who is in the lead and who sucks the most. No wonder movies, no epic feeling of building a great empire, and the interface remains the same, simple yet complex with no double clicking or whole unit selection.
