Civilization V will charge players to create an empire that will stand the test of time when it becomes available in North America and internationally on September 21 and 24, respectively.

2K Games and Firaxis have announced the fifth game in the popular and addictive Civilization series, Sid Meier's Civilization 5 for the PC. Civilization 5 is intended to renew the "just one more turn" series with a brand new game engine that features a new combat engine that promises massive battles and improved diplomacy that requires deeper engagement with other leaders.

Perhaps the most noticeable change with Civilization V is the introduction of hexagonal tiles that will allow "for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire."
The game will have an in-game community hub that will allow you to share user-created scenarios, scores, and achievements. Multiplayer will feature online competition but hotseat emai modes as well. There will also be local hotseat and LAN modes available to compete with friends.

“Each new version of Civilization presents exciting challenges for our team,” said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. “Thankfully, ideas on how to bring new and fun experiences to Civ players never seem to stop flowing. From fully animated leaders and realistic landscapes, new combat tactics, expanded diplomacy and shared mods, we’re excited for players to see the new vision our team at Firaxis has brought to the series.”

As long as we don't have to trudge around a Stack of Doom (TM) loaded with siege units to get past insane city defenses, and Riflemen don't dominate the mid-game.

Oh, and fix tech trade exploitation. Most playthroughs on Monarch+ are 99% abusing bad AI tech trades and 1% anything else. It's quite boring (but required to routinely succeed at the top difficulty levels).

I could never get into Civ, but I am not a huge fan of RTS's either.

I loved civ 4, but hated all of the expansions.

Hopefully civ 5 wont have corporations and espionage and all of that weird crap the AI cheats its ass off with.

Uh, BtS was amazing and improved Civ4 dramatically over vanilla...

Corporations and espionage are far more exploitable by the player than the AI...

w00t! The graphics look pretty.

I wonder how much of this will be a rip of the diplomatic mechanics that were in the recent Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy micro-expansion. The part about "massive battles" also makes me wonder if they are trying to add some RTS elements to it (ripping a little more away from Sins).

Ya know, I've never played a Civilization game before...I loved Lords of the Realm, any similarity whatsoever? I miss having a little economics mixed into the gameplay but I don't want it to be the main focus.

There is no real time combat like lords of the realm.

Ive been wishing for a new lords of the realm style game since LOR2. LOR3 wasn't even playable so it doesn't count.

I haven't played in a very long time... since shortly after BOTS came out actually...

The highest difficulty ive played is whatever the 5th one from the bottom was. I got sick of the cheating AI and gave up. I love the game on LAN though.

The AI has to cheat because they can't think and adapt like a player can. Usually, they are just given sheer numbers advantages (AKA they research faster, build faster, build cheaper, etc.) to remain competitive at higher difficulty levels. Yes, it is annoying, but until true AI can be developed, it's how it has to be.

My first thought on seeing the thread was I like most of the changes/adjustment from 3 to 4, just needs a bit more engine refinement. This news on hexes though is like orgasmic.
