These are complex questions with widely varying answers based on multiple variables that change every game (and sometimes over the course of a single game). There is a very friendly and active community over at www.civfanatics.com where you can find extensive help articles and forum discussions about these things.
^^What he said.
One general idea, if a city has control of a food resource, put a farm on it. There are a few times when it's not the best thing. For cities without food resource, look at the population, the bread icon output thing, etc...
How many cities should you have? One more than you have now!
Any places have good pre-order deals right now? I checked Amazon/BB/Steam, nothing impressive.

So is anyone interested in setting up some plans for Multiplayer? CIv4 Multiplayer was a blast with friends. I think it would be nice to get a few long games going!
Well depending on what you want to spent and get so far Direct2Drive has the best pre-order for content:
http://www.direct2drive.com/9620/pr...ivilization-V-Digital-Deluxe-Edition-Download
It comes with Civ III complete, the first DLC pack, two civilizations and one scenario. I dunno how long the promo works for, but you can get $10 off if you use this code: SchoolSucks
You can read up on the various releases and deals here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=361005
Even if I buy it on D2D I can activate on Steam, right?
Also, it appears that code is good for the regular version to making it $40.
very tempting with that $10 off...

I'd love to play online, usually have 2-3 friends that play but they aren't always around. Count me in.
I actually have Civ 4 complete, i dont see a point in getting Civ 3.
thanks!
Yeah, the nickle and diming is getting old. I did notice, though, that the D2D version offers something called the 'Double Civilization and Scenario Pack' for free when it becomes available. Might have some of those map packs in there.
Well the draw with that D2D deal is you get $10 off, the first released DLC pack (late 2010) and the Babylon civilization.
Civ III if you never played it is very different mechanically then Civ IV and a lot of people like it more then Civ IV. I already have it on disc so I don't care that it comes with it, I'm primiarily interested in the other add ons you get with the D2D deal.
Though it looks like through D2D you miss out on:
Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: Mesopotamia
Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: Asia
Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: Mediterranean
Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: The Americas
But none of the other deals include more then one of those which is very, very dissapointing considering how 2K is selling this game in fractions.
A spirited preview article with lots of nice screenshots (8-31-10):

Unquestionably.
I plan onbuying the game through Steam for sure.
All the additional DLC content that gets released via other sources and such I may just look for in "alternative methods". I can't buy it all from everywhere.
When it comes down to it though, there is always so much modding and expansions in the Civ fan base, offical DLC usually isn't even "needed".
