I'm actually getting excited about it. I suck at Civ and have always wanted to get better but I've only recently been playing with my PC again (went to console land for a bit).

Regardless of how much I suck, Civ 3 & 4 swallowed hundreds of hours from me. I'm hoping Civ 5 does the same.

anyone ever feel compelled to live up to historical precedence?

I was playing a game of Civ4 last night as the Romans... the Greeks had settled right next to me and while they weren't really in my way, didn't have any resources I wanted, etc I still felt compelled to subjugate them. left them with 1 city that's surrounded by my borders and I refuse to allow an open boarders treaty with them.

Lol. While these things can be amusing, I usually find they come with very annoying consequences. With 1 city left, it will be the capital and be producing a ton of culture which will likely mean its stealing tiles from your cities around it. Also, you will be getting extra unhappiness points in all conquered Greek cities until their civilization is completely destroyed ("We yearn for our homeland" or some such nonsense). I try to play on maps/difficulties that challenge me so allowing something like this just for amusement can easily cost me the game.

yea its usually not worth leaving couple cities because the ones you took over will get unhappiness from wanting to join the motherland. it's worse when it's down to the last few cities and they find your rival to become vassals of.

Ah yes, that is possibly one of the worst things that can happen. A small, beaten down civ will almost immediately find someone to vassal to (and some leaders are more likely to do it than others), which makes their last little bit of land (which may now be sitting right in the middle of your empire) completely untouchable unless you also want to tangle with their master. On top of that, that little empire you crushed and left with 3 cities probably hates you, and that relation will affect how their master (and I believe any of his other vassals as well) treats you in diplomatic relationships (i.e. likelihood to declare war/peace, technology trades, threats, treaties, etc). I'm sure I'm forgetting other factors, it really can become a disaster sometimes.

Yes, awesome. Apparently the D2D preorder also has a bonus of you get the first DLC that contains 2 civs + scenarios for free also.

I pre-ordered from amazon.com today.

I'm old. get off my lawn, damnit.

anyone think there's anything in the Collector's Edition to make it actually worth the extra $50?

why would you order from amazon when you can get the deal from D2D for $10 off? they also have the best bonus, first DLC for free and double civ pack. and the deluxe includes babylonian civ. but it's your money i guess.

I bet that most of the $50 is allocated towards the metal figurines, which I don't even remotely give a crap about. Art books in special editions tend to be very hit-or-miss in terms of "worth it" or not. Soundtrack you can get in the digital deluxe edition ($60).

I'm passing on the $100 version and going with the $60.

because I'm old and, even though I know it doesn't matter in my head, still kinda prefer a physical copy.
