I'm not sure I like this "more emphasis on combat" thing. I was always a more peaceful type of guy. I'd wage war early to get good land and resources (and cripple a couple of civs) and then use that advantage to build my empire peacefully.

I hope it isn't just some combat fest where you need to wage war constantly to win.

I don't feel like the game has more emphasis on combat (though with the removal of the religion aspect, I guess there is in a way). It's more thta combat is more intricate/detailed/etc. Stack of doom is gone--this is a good thing. And if you really aren't a fighter, it is much easier to utilize choke points + zone of control to effectively defend a larger area.

That's quick - not a huge download then? How big?

I'm showing just over 4.5 GB. But I don't know how accurate that is. Not sure if files are hidden or whatever due to the encryption of the game being locked right now.

(Holy crap it's been ages since I've last posted here...back in '07)

Anyway, for those that haven't preordered yet, the D2D version is just a license key that you activate with steam, which like minmaster said will then let you preload. The DLC will probably have a separate key when it's released later on that you plug into steam. Civ3's a standard Zip download for those that haven't gotten it yet.

Also, the promo code PAX still seems to work for $5 off since the other ones have expired.

i'm just going by what i read in civfanatics. some people are getting charged a dollar for tax, so i think they're going by some other rules.

So I just plunked down the cash for the collectors edition. I've loved every iteration of civ since the first one, so here's hoping for a five-peat.

I really really want this. Unfortunately I know that if I buy it, I will simply lose too many days.

I have no doubt that this will be a good game, but:
(STEAM ONLY) + (DLC) = YAWNER

Steam is awesome, so I don't care about that.

The DLC thing is stupid, but it looks like the modding options are well-integrated into the game, so you should be able to get enough free mods that you don't need to do the DLC. That's what I'm planning, if I want to go beyond the base game.

I always do Custom Map. Except once I did a Map of Earth.
I like archipelago myself, but I'm a total isolationist who hates protracted military engagements (which is inevitable when you're sharing borders with 2-3 other countries)

DLC is a mappack I think... does anyone actually play them?

Aren't all these Pre-Release specials basically DLC's?
That's my understanding from some of the early postings I've read here.

The DLC's I'm referring to are the Civilizations/Leaders - which should have been part of the game from the start.

This is just milking customers, and I'll not support it.

Same. I like a well developed, good sized, central island first. Sharing a entire land based map with other civs will always lead to military conflicts, constantly.

hmm I didn't see this before, but there's a graphical breakdown of what DLC is available for the store you plan to buy from:

http://www.civilization5.com/preorder/

Which in my opinion is stupid and very un-Firaxis like. Yeah I know they didn't come up with it, but basically if you want these map DLCs you can't get them all right away which seems to me like it would encourage people to pirate this stuff. The primary reason they went with Steampower is to prevent it...

Technically, though items like the Babylon Civilization with leader Nebuchadnezzar II seems like a DLC to me. Sure you get it if you get the deluxe edition and it doesn't look it's a download later, but still smells like future DLC to me.

And what do you mean does anyone play the map packs? I do, especially the world map where the game starts out as historically accurate as possible.

i almost never play "map pack" or "scenarios" included with previous civ games. however, i play random civs all the time so i didn't want to miss out on babylon. so i got the deluxe digital version.

one thing 2k games has already announced is that ALL these DLCs will be purchasable later on, so if you didn't get in on these different cradle of civilization map packs or babylon, you can expect to see them for sale later on. and in the very end, i suspect all of these will be packaged together for some special gold edition.

This. I just pre-ordered the Vanilla edition on Steam this morning myself, but the odds of my using that extra content is slim. Same as with most DLC, it seems a waste of money.

Do they block you from downloading it in Hong Kong or just at the purchasing level?

lol and Wednesday

My recollection is that they block it at the purchasing level. I know I tried it before and it didn't work. Steam is more direct as they can detect what region I am in and they adjust the storefront to only display the games available in my region. With Steam, the only problem I had was that I couldn't get XCom for a long time but I was able to get it a few months ago. D2D has had region restrictions on software for me that I do not have with Steam.
