They need to make Alpha Kentaurus (since EA owns the rights to Alpha Centauri). Civs one of those games that is still great throughout the ages; I'll probably buy it.

Can't read all the articles while at work (damn proxy) but sounds like Sid is the lead designer of this one again? (Bryan Reynolds was the designer of Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri, don't remember who was 3, and Soren Johnson(?) was the designer of 4.)

Hurray for a real PC game! Kudos to Firaxis for keeping console Civ separate from PC Civ

I was a little worried when Soren departed since I loved all the changes he brought to IV. I was thinking we'd never see such dramatic changes again after he left.

w00t! The graphics look pretty.

I wonder how much of this will be a rip of the diplomatic mechanics that were in the recent Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy micro-expansion. The part about "massive battles" also makes me wonder if they are trying to add some RTS elements to it (ripping a little more away from Sins).

I was thinking more along the lines of ripping Total War. But I have no problem with that.

Indeed. People complain about WOW addiction, but man, I had more trouble putting Civ4 down due to One More Turn Syndrome (OMTS).

"Just a few more turns...I gotta get rid of Monty!"
"Can't stop now! Shaka is on the ropes!"
"Oooh Genghis Khan is annoying...he's gotta go!"
"Crap, it's 4 AM. :\"

I have loved the Civ series since 1 in the early 90's, but in order for me to get 5, they'd really have to improve the AI. The way it cheats is just because they can't seem to program any good AI, so it overcomes its limitations with cheats.

I have not see any radical improvements in AI since... Really the first one. New units, sure, paratroopers, sure, same type of crappy AI and diplomacy garbage, yep.

FUCK YES

Hex tiles sound awesome.

Hmm... If they add in pentagonal tiles to the map, then they could make a truely spherical world, no?

edit: er, that's probably wrong. But they could make a spherical world if they're moving away from square tiles.

Judging from people's reactions to this, I suspect that productivity in the nation's workplaces is going to drop for a couple weeks after Civ 5's release.

maybe, but not nearly close to what will happen in S Korea after SC2. I predict a self-inflicted famine.

Infants will starve due to neglect; supposed "adults" will starve themselves because....well, neglect.

Khaaaaannnn!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist. OTOH, I'm really excited about this as well. Hope it is truly an improvement and worth the wait compared to CivIV.

This isn't a game, its a drug. They should have designated rehab centers for it.

If you never played with some of the AI mods you should look into them as they make the game much more challenging at lower levels without cheating.

That said here's an interesting post, I don't know how legit it is:

Reading the Civ5-thread in Paradox Interactive's OT, a Danish guy has written down some info given in a Danish magazine:

Quote:
- Switch from squares to hexagons changing the way the game plays. More room for maneuvers and more tactical options.
- Changes to combat. More depth in combat, no more stacking of units. This will lead to bigger focus on terrain.
- Inspired by Panzer General.
- Reintroduction of Bombardment, now archers and siege equipment can shoot over melee units.
- Better diplomatic AI.
- More diplomatic options between players.
- Less "cheating" AI.
- Religion is not a factor anymore.
- Ressources are not infinite. For example one source of horse only supplies enough horses for 1 unit, but when that horseman dies the horses will respawn as a unit. (this confused me alittle, i guess we will have to watch it in action)
- City States as a sort of small countries that never develop beyond their single city. They can provide bonusses if you befriend them, or you can take over their land.
- Civics are out, now there is something called "Social Policies".
- About the same amount of wonders, the tech tree will feel familiar. Great People still in.
- Some victory conditions changed. For example in Conquest you only have to capture all the other capitals. Eliminates boring mop up phase.
- Unique Civ leader bonusses, no more standard "Spiritual" or "Financial".
- DirectX 11 support.
- Built in webbrowser. Sid Meier is also working on a facebook application of Civilization.
------------

"- Less "cheating" AI."

It looks like religion has been taken out

City states sound pretty interesting as does ranged bombardment and archers.

sounds like a heavu dose of redoing combat which is good, hope the things taken away get a better mechanic in their place.
