aieee.

Civ V doesn't play nice with multi monitor set up. Even in full screen when you scroll to the edge of the map...you just scroll on over to the adjacent monitor. So I cannot scroll to the right by just flicking the mouse to the right edge of he screen! Annoying.

oh that sucks for my triple 1200x1900 monitor setup

Got a couple hours in on it today. Game unlocked around 11am Eastern time for me.

Still getting used to the 'single stack' army setup. I can't see where I can manually assign my cities population to work specific tiles, only the menu which specifies to work more on certain things.

The Diplomacy options seem more interesting early on. One nice thing I noticed right away is if another civ asks you to go to war you have the option to 'let me wait 10 turns'. Helps to placate a civ you want to be friendly with and gives those precious turns to move your units into place and change production prior to war. You can also elect to say 'no thanks' when the ten turns are up and you're prompted again to go to war (although I'm sure there are negative consequences to that).

I'm only around 2800 BC so far in my first campaign.

I you've played Civ 3 or 4 then it won't take much to pick up on this game.

Well I just jacked up my left thumb while working on my daughters bicycle. I guess I'll just have to use my right hand for playing this while I have my left hand in ice.

sorry to hear that. but you really need the thumb to play?

No, but as I said I'm keeping that hand on ice to keep the swelling down. Woe is me, I can't finish raking, I'll have to play Civ instead. My wife will probably tell me I subconsciously hurt myself on purpose.

Uh, connect an ambidextrous mouse?

Played for an hours and a half.

So far I am liking it a lot! A Major change from civs before, game seems to be moving at a slower pace, it feels like I have to manage a lot more things now. Is there an autopilot for workers?

It's there, on the top right corner when you're looking at a city, right above that menu that specifies "production/gold/food/etc". Can't remember the wording right now, but there's some command button there that puts the city view into the reassigning-workers mode.

No real wonder movies: I am disappoint.

Fought a couple small wars now -- I like the hexes, one-unit-per-tile, and bombardment a lot.

Production does seem rather slow, but I guess since each individual unit is so much more powerful now they had to slow it down.

Controls are pretty chunky. I *really* dislike the lack of spacebar ending your turn. I think for how epic it is to build a great character, they are damn near useless this time around.

Overall, I think it offers a lot of complexity where there wasn't in civ IV while simplifying other things.

I am downloading the game right now on Steam. Getting 3.5 MB/sec. I love Fios sometimes.

I started left-click dragging instead.

Intro video pretty cool - sets it up well for the game if you've never played CIV before.

Without reading the manual or barely watching any Civ5 videos:

Lots of visual / GUI changes since Civ IV - took me a while to figure out how to turn on the hexagons, visual icons, etc [gotta have my hexagons and visual icons!].

Disappointed I can't press space bar to continue [or maybe that is an option - again, I haven't read the manual yet nor watched many of the videos]

Animations are very well done - I've already encountered a few neutral cities and I was surprised the game would let me trespass into another occupied territory.

Fought and killed a barbarian settlement.
Found a natural wonder
Found a few locations which rewarded me with gold and archery [awesome since the game chose Roman]

I figured I'd see how attacking a size 1 city would after about 15 turns - CTD CRASH. The game adviser did warn me not to attack... maybe I should've listened.

Definitely will be on my list to start once I'm done with a few other city building games / Amnesia Dark Descent.

I am curious about the hardware requirements for Civ 5. On paper, they seem a bit steep. Anyone want to report how it runs on their system? My E8500 and 4870 512M seems to run it fine with max settings at 1920x1200.

Haven't tested my T6600/9400M IGP notebook yet, but its running Mint atm. I am curious how the game would run, if at all, on an AMD K325 CPU.

This.

I cannot find a way to remap the controls. I checked out the options, but the only things I see are gameplay, audio, and video. Are there really no control settings, or am I overlooking something? I keep wanting to tell myself that I'm just blind... but no, there really isn't any option for this. What the crap?

No Leonard Nimoy.

Yea sucks he retired, he was a great voice for reading the tech stuff. Who is it now?

to Everyone:
How is the game btw? I haven't gotten it yet as I'm pretty deep in SC2 at the moment and there is no way I have enough time for both right now.

finding city states to be super annoying. short of buying them off, there doesn't seem to be any consistent way of maintaining relationships other than hoping for random events/needs.

wow i miss the old interface very much... little things like mouseover on a worker showing how many turns left to finish his improvement... so many little things that i miss now!

I don't like the new interface at all, less is not more. I also don't like how the game seems to have borrowed from all other games. There's like a sound effect for every action you take or for anything you click. There's voice overs for everything as if I was an idiot and could not read. I feel like I'm playing Warcraft or some other RTS game.

That one female adviser sounds like Whoopi Goldberg, yikes!

I dunno if it's because I'm not using AA, but I'm not feeling the graphics. It's not as polished looking as all the previews I've seen. Everything is maxed out except for AA and I'm using DX9.

BTW, there's already a mod out to remove the 1 unit per tile restriction, lol!

my first impression is that civ went mainstream, it is very friendly towards new players. Also it appears to be fairly different form previous versions, which will old players like me appreciate - i like change, I've spend endless hours on first four games.

I agree with postmortem that it has been mainstreamed. They definitely wanted to expand to different age groups in civ v.

I played for about 2 hours and I am trying to get use to the hex and single unit stacks. You can't leave units garrisoned in the city, got to keep skipping their turn to progress to next turn, and of course, single stack units.

The game does not seem as "epic" as it once was. It will take some getting use to, but for 50 dollars, I'm not overly impressed.

You can definitely garrison units in a city -- there's an action icon for it in the lower left when your unit is on a main city hex -- but I'm guessing that, in keeping with their new single-stack philosophy, you can only garrison a single unit there. Border defense is the new turtle paradigm.

There's also an option to sleep a unit, which I assume means skip turns indefinitely until manually activated.

First on performances: On my modest rig, the game runs really smoothly on DX11 with everything maxed out except on option that I don't recall. The game, IMO, is gorgeous (DX11 must help at that), the landscapes and water details are really nice in a way that exploring is fun.

The interface can be weird at first. I've played Civ 1 and 2 extensively and a few hour on Civ IV (which I couldn't get into) and now Civ V (which is my favorite with the first one).

The settlers and workers get a signal when they're doing nothing so we don't forget about them but the other units you just have to think about them...is there an option to tell us when ANY unit is idled?

So far so good, I started my first game yesterday with the Ottomans. Discovered some ancient ruins and defeated 3 barbarians camps so far but I think I attacked a neutral city-state too fast (they pissed me quickly...I protected them from barbarians and a dozen turns later we're no longer friendly?!!?...yeah then eat my flame arrows and spears!!!!!!!). I'm enjoying this game a lot, great buy for fans and new players!
