Installed a few of the mods from civfanatics, ones which increase tile yields and a few which tweak the speed/tech progression, and an economy one, and it plays better. The computer AI is still off but at least it builds units and cities/buildings better.

The issue now is the time it takes to go from one turn to the next. And I'm not even in the 1900's yet. Granted my X2 4800+ is not a speed demon but it's near unbearable. Makes me not even want to load a game up.

I've played Civ games for many years and just tried the demo for Civ5.

Really wasn't impressed at all. Graphics weren't good at all and the game just seemed to be too much like Total War (which it can never be).

I don't see myself buying it...

Total War, seriously?

As I've stated way earlier in this thread, this is my first time playing a Civ game. My plan was to start on Settler difficulty and increase it by one every time I won a match. Well, I just won a match on Emperor, leaving only Immortal and Deity to go.

As much as I'd like to think that I'm naturally awesome at this game, something tells me the AI is particularly weak. We'll see how long it takes me to win on these last two difficulty settings. I'm hoping it get ramped up significantly.

there's a nice mod out right now that cranks up the difficulty of city-whacking significantly.

speaking of which, I wonder if they won't tweak the higher difficulty levels in the future to give enemy cities better defenses. think maybe free walls/barracks/castle when that tech is researched for example, maybe on immortal with effectiveness x 1.5 and deity x 2.

I'm romping through my 2nd emperor game right now. I can literally count on one hand the # of times I won on emperor in civ iv, now it's too easy. moving on to immortal next game for some competition.

stick to small/tiny maps and lower graphical settings and you should be ok, but larger maps are generally a no-no without a 4ghz or so quad and a nice dx11 gpu. hopefully SB and/or BD will help things out next year. Who would've thought that civ5 would be the next crysis?

I don't miss religion from Civ IV, but I really miss not being able to set my tax and science rates.

It also takes too damn long to finish turns and build units. I spent 14 hours playing a game on a standard sized map... and a lot of that time was spent waiting for the computer players to finish their turns.

eh so you're classifying total war as turn based?

umm...b/c it is? each faction has a turn. you make your moves, they make theirs.

There is an "End Turn" button in the bottom corner that you have to tap to...end your turn and progress?

exactly like Civ.

EDIT: I'm talking about Rome. I'm not familiar with the others in the series. The turn-based structure of the campaign mode is exactly like that in Civ.

It also applies to Medieval 2 and Empire as well. RW, M2TW,and ETW are all TBS games, you just have the option of real time combat.

The problem with small maps though is the 1UpT becomes mind numbing. Since someone brought up Total War it's almost what Civ needs now, a huge battlefield to wage war on because on medium to small maps it's tedious to play. One little blocked hex and your so call formation is ruined.

I spent about an hour chasing Sullieman's spearmen around two mountain ranges with my archers.

I like the fact that you must use more strategy now. If you don't like the smaller maps, however, dial down all details to medium with low text/tess and play larger maps. my games run faster with that on larger maps than they do with all settings maxed on normal maps. also, set water to low and you should have tons of open space, just be careful b/c on higher levels you'll get rival civs spamming cities on every available inch of territory.

The problem on higher levels is that EVERY ki is so aggressive...
i played a lot of deity games on a normal and small pangea map and every time i got attacked between round 30 and 50... in my first game two nations declared war at the same time at ~turn30... a few turns after i had my first settler... and both of them attacked with about 6 units (3 warriors + 3 archers)...
these first attacks are so hard to defend (especially if japan is the attacker... bushido... -.-)... the ki itself is dumb but the massive starting bonus + agression is lame...

Well it seems that after doing a lot of traveling Mr Shafer has returned to announce a 'big' patch due out in a couple of weeks:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=390661

"The game isn't perfect, but we feel good about the foundation laid so far, and expect Civ 5 will stand up with every other game out there and continue to get better over time."

Ah nothing like admitting you've released an incomplete game for $50.00

crap i'm in a bind. (a) I got bit by the one more turn bug (B) trying to seige a city state. However, they are literally just an island whose size is ONE tile big. I attacked them with frigrates and their defenses are at zero, but I cannot seem to board them with my frigates. I Also can't bring my muskateers and board them from the ocean....is there anything I can do, or is it impossible and i should simply make peace?

you don't bring units on board a ship anymore. they will transform into a boat when you move land units into a water tile.

yeah i know, but i can't seem to land them on that one tile large island that has the city state....i initially thought i'd temporarily turn into 'human form', make my attack, and go back to my boat form.

oh in that case, they might need the amphibious attack promotion to make that attack.

This is the reason I miss transports and unit stacking. Since there's no unit stacking, you can force any invading naval forces to attack at significant penalty by placing units on the coast and preventing the units from converting back to ground forces. Works pretty well on cities on smaller islands and has prevented me from taking over civilizations with a single city on an island.

honestly, i don't think this game can be saved. at least not to the degree where i would have to play it with the 1 more turn addiction of previous civ games.

I was thinking of that scenario last night while playing and wondered if you could actually capture a city on one tile. I don't recall you being able to attack from water directly to a city in other civ games. Would love to see a screen shot or saved game file.

Me neither, at least I don't think 2k/Firaxis is willing to invest the time and money to pull out all the stops and bring us what we want.

Hopefully we aren't heading for the future of Civ:

Yeah I think it's pretty much unsalvageable. The markets tile improvement still kills me lol. I haven't played in 2 weeks. I only could stand playing through this 2 or 3 times. When you can wrap up a game before 1200AD on the highest difficulty without a sweat something is seriously borked with the AI.
