This is an interesting power point presentation about the transition from Civ 3 to Civ 4 [and applies to Civ 5 as well] - 3.2mb zip file:

http://www.civfanatics.net/downloads/misc/gdc04soren.zip

Yeah I remember seeing that once years ago.

It's a pretty rotten attitude in my opinion. Sums up to saying screw your loyal hard core fans - they always want more and makes it harder for us to satisfy them and they will buy new additions in our franchise anyway cause they're such suckers. Just simplify our game to make it quick and easy to release and just target new simple fans.

Though when this was written Civ4 was the new one and I actually liked Civ4. But it appears that they didnt really follow the ideas outlined in this presentation until after Civ 4 with Revolutions and then of course Shit V, I mean Civ 5

How strict are the system requirements? My brother would love Civ 5, but his laptop is about 3 years old. I'm fairly certain it doesn't have a Core 2 Duo, or a graphics card in the same league as the requirements.

What makes it so demanding? A turn based strategy game doesn't seem like it should need that type of hardware. Any chance he can run it on a slower computer?

The other game he'd like is Starcraft 2, which has significantly lower requirements, and it seems like it should have much higher requirements, being real-time.

If it isn't a dual core I wouldn't bother. i think Civ 5 is optimized for multi-cores so a single core would get the crap beaten out of it.

What makes it demanding? Well, it has to keep track and do AI for each "piece" on the board so to speak, and also keep track of each economy, trading, etc. Games like Starcraft don't need to do that.

You know... after reading through the most recent pages of this thread, I think I think I'll just get all the expansions and go back to Civ 4 if I ever get the urge to play again. I figured this game would sort itself out this long after release, but it has become apparent that the developers clearly have a different vision for this game than I (and by the sounds of it everyone else) do. Too bad. A big poop stain on an otherwise epic franchise.

The really nice thing about Civ IV is it's mature and has all the mod tools in place so you can easily find more then a few epic mods that completely change up gameplay.

so, what's with all the civ5 hate? on a whim, i loaded the demo last weekend and played it. it was pretty fun once i figured out wtf i was doing. what makes civ4 better? ive never played a civ game before. in fact, i dont play turn based strategy games. the only ones ive ever played and really gotten into are MOO and MOO2. im more a FPS'er and to an extent RTS'er, tho my RTS'ing is typically multiplayer only starcraft 2 or sins of a solar empire. long story longer, i had no preconceived notions about what civ5 should be. i just read some reviews and played the demo. seems like it could be a fun time waster.

Relative Civ noob, previous experience was a LAN game of Civ 2 like 10 years ago.

Did not like Civ 5, but went out and got Civ 4, enjoyed it a lot more.

Unfortunately, that's all civ 5 is - a fun time waster. Civ 4 was the kind of game that was a life waster. It would ruin marriages. It would suck you in. 1 more turn meant 3 more hours. It was deep. It was tactical. It had balanced ways to play the game.

Civ 5 is a very, very focused military strategy game. Hexes instead of tiles is a nice (little) improvement but otherwise it's very stripped down and bland. There is little to no emphasis on building infrastructure. The depth of balancing an economy, research, culture, and happiness was mostly removed. Even the little things, like when units moved into forest tiles in Civ 4 birds would fly out of the trees, are completely void. Civ 5 has no personality.

What's really sucky about that is PC gaming isn't dieing, but instead heading in this horrifyingly numb and simplified gameplay direction. A fate worse then death.

I don't really think this is a problem with the PC industry as a whole. It's just in this particular instance, firaxis put a bunch of noobs in charge of making an ambitious, revolutionary sequel. By contrast, its predecessor was the end-of-the-line in evolutionary development of the franchise, made by the most experienced strategy game programmers in the business.

If I look at which game I spent the most time playing, it's CIV series by far, started from Civ 1, and only skipped Civ 2 (couldn't get it, I was a kid then...). I was really looking forward to Civ 5, but from what I've read, I would be completely dissapointed. I also hate Steam, and have no Steam powered games, and I thought this would be the first got-to-have game that would make me put up with it, but all things considered, I will not buy it, probably not even with some fairly radical patches. Civ 4 was really balanced pretty well in terms of micromanagement, and I really see no reason to "streamline" stuff, this really means dumbing down for me.
Nicer graphics, smarter AI and perhaps a couple gameplay changes was all they had to do to keep me interested, seriously, that was all...

I don't know, there are a lot more of these instances. E.g. Oblivion vs Morrowind, Oblivion has nicer graphics, but is not challenging at all, and is just overall dumbed down and made easier...

i think many of us would argue it's not even that

I was trying to give it as nice a compliment as I possibly could.

A very focused military strategy game where the AI is completely and utterly inept at military strategy in every possible way.

True, the AI is terrible. Civilization AI has never been great, and this particular version seems to have regressed.

I want to try another type of playthrough. I want to try befriending city-states and test their benefits.

My questions are:
1- Is it worth having a trade route between your cities and friendly city-states?
2- Is their a way to establish a trade route with a city-states that's build on a small island? (when you play on the archipelago map).

Thanks!

summary - civ 5 sucks

tldr version - I played all civ series from the beginning. civ 1 is one of the first games i got when i first got into pc gaming.

i got civ 5 when it first came out, never installed it, and ignored most reviews as i do not want to spoil myself. now, i installed it a few days ago, with the latest patch. i expect the game to run well now that they have a few months to 'polish' it with patches.

boy, what a steamy piece of poop this game is.

gameplay aside, the major issue i have is how long the AI takes during computer's turn. if i have to take that long to decide what to do in starcraft 2, i'd loose every game. AI still sucks regardless how long it took just adds more salt to the wound.

if you enjoy the civilization series, just uninstall and go back to civ4.

Totally agree with Pepsei.
I can get past the shortcomings of the game, but if it's going to take THAT LONG per turn once you get up into the further ages, freaking forget it. I don't play games to watch an hour-glass for 51% of the time.

I agree with your review, but that is a bad comparison. Civ is TBS, Starcraft is RTS. so they are completely different systems and your survivability during another player's (AI) turn is moot.

That, and the number of AI + calculations computing in Civ is vastly greater than that in Starcraft.

but yeah, shitty game. And no--it certainly should not lag down like that.

Is the Ai multi-threaded in Civ 5? developers could certainly take a cue from Stardock and the AI team for Elemental.

how is elemental now w/all it's patches?

I like it; but to be fair, I haven't played it much since the latest two versions--the first of those being the major overhaul to game mechanics and spell system/economy.

I kept getting owned in the early stages of exploration by random bandits or wolves. It was way easy before that.

I couldn't say if the major bug problems with some of the quests have been fixed or not. But, from what I've read, it seems to have improved substantially.

Still, very fun game if you're into the turn-based 4x game.
