I've never played a Civilization game before. Have I been missing out?

By the time Civ 4 caught my attention I promised to wait for Civ 5, but now that it's announced...Idk. I'm more eager for Battlefield 3.

How disappointing.

Looks like this is going to be the first Civ game I pass on . . .
I know there are lots of Steam lovers on here, but I'm just not willing to have a game I paid for held hostage by Steam should they so deem.
Again, there is no frickin' reason too require an Internet connection for a Single player game.
This is just a step below what Ubisoft is doing.
Looks like my future holds a lot of support for the Indie developers and none for big devs . . . .
No where in that does it say internet connection is required. They've done the same thing with Civ4 and you do not have to be on the net to play a single player game.
From what I gather from the post is that you have to have a Steam account to activate it - that's the DRM method they've chosen.
That pretty much means I'd need to get a Steam account and be willing to let them hold the keys to my game - sorry, I have desire or intention of doing either.
EDIT:
Actually this details it better:

I thought I read a quote where Sid said, "Railroads was the game he always wanted to make"...
That game was the worse in the series.
I'll def pickup Civ 5, but I'm really the type of person that still hates wild card baseball I like the tried and true, if it ain't broke don't fix it way of thinking.
That said I'm also pissed that religion is gone. It was almost perfectly done, not over powering and not something you could totally ignore. Now they are taking it out. I doubt it's coming out because of political correctness, but probably more because this version of Civ seems to be heavily focused on military.
Did the second expansion to Civ 3 get horrible reviews? I don't remember, but it's the first time I ever emailed Firaxis complaining how I wanted my money back because the multiplayer was so horrendous hat I wanted to punch my monitor.
Well, your loss then.
And that link is just a bunch of people whining back and forth, I'm not going to read that crap. Most of them haven't used steam since it first came out but they like to whine about it. The only downside I could ever see to steam is an inability to resell your games, but I never do that anyway so it hardly effects me.
The one complaint that did make me lol "when I hit x it just goes to the taskbar", I mean come on that's the best you could do? A TON of programs do that and it's very convenient and really necessary that steam does.
yup too many ignorant people that thinks steam is some sort of malware.Well, your loss then.

they need to realize it's not what they make it out to be... some are saying it cripples your computer, lol. morons...

Yup.
Steam goes down,
No you don'tSteam goes out of Business
, someone hacks my account (happened to my son) - and I lose all my games (just a few examples).
No you don't
No you don't
Yeah, well, the same thing could be said about your bank account and your money. Your account is your responsibility.
The first two statements are just untrue and anti-Steam FUD.
. . . and GM will never go Bankrupt . . . .
You, believe what you will, and I'll believe what I will.
If Valve is destroyed in a nuclear holocaust tomorrow your Steam games will still work. You do not need to log in to Steam to play them. The applications are entirely local to your machine. You will not be able to update them through Steam, sure. And you're probably out of luck for multi-player as well, but that would be no different from every other MP service out there.
But please please please stop saying that playing your Steam games locally is dependent on the Steam servers being up. It's just not true and it never has been.
So, if I reformat my System an need to reinstall a game I bought from Steam I can do that - even if their Servers are unavailable?
That's not the understanding I have of Steam.
I was soooooo excited. I've owned every Civ game. Hell, I've bought about six copies of Civ IV for friends and family. Then they come out with the steam horsecrap. 8-( 8-( 8-(
First Ubisoft, now this shit. Soon I'll have to give up gaming entirely.
Buh-bye Civ V.
Yup.

Seems pretty moronic too me . . . .
Steams Client is not even worth going into, the above more than amply justifies my concerns.
