2K Games announced today that Sid Meier’s Civilization® V will be available in North America on September 21, 2010 and internationally on September 24, 2010 for Windows PC.

That September release date is full of malice. Right as college starts back up they release Civ V. That's just mean.

There's no quick play I know of. The beauty of playing on a pc is that you can save your game and come back later, though. Either Civ appeals to you or it doesn't, I guess.

About those viewable diplomatic movies on the Civ V site, does anyone besides me hope that those voice recordings aren't the final cut? They sound too obviously like they're from a studio booth. Some environmental effects would be nice, just to make it more natural.

Over at the official site http://www.civilization5.com/#/civilizations/ they have the confirmed list of civilization up with many of them viewable as they would be in their in-game animations.

Bit of a strange list compared to previous releases.

Anyone know if the throne room made it back? I see it being discussed at civfanatics but I don't see a confirmation.

Looks like some civs get two special units while some get a special unit and a special building. :hmm:

I remember not liking civs that had a crappy special units. Maybe they came too late (F-15s), or were outdated quickly (the brit sailing ship). Wouldn't be so bad maybe, except some special units were really awesome.

Yep - if you have an idea of how you want to progress [skill tree] and build your civilization - you might be able to play a round in about 3ish hours.

Things that can reduce "game time":

Game Speed: "Quick: It takes fewer turns to construct, research, and improve."
World Size - Tiny or Duel
Map - Maps with less water should take less time to win/lose.
Climate - Temperate [similar to Earth's climate]
Difficulty - the lower the easy it will be for you to win.
Disable "Show friendly moves" and "Show enemy moves"
Enable "Quick moves", "Quick Combat [offense]", Quick Combat [defense]"

funny thing with Civ4.... I didn't like the quicker play options after playing them through a few times, once I switched to regular or long play, I think I may have only ever "finished" one game, while still playing the game for over a hundred hours

How do you guys spend so long on a single game? I've played probably 50-100 Civ games, finished at least half of them, and won most of those. I play on Normal speed, maybe Epic (the level slower than normal), usually on Tiny/Small maps, but my games seldomly take more than a couple hours. Me and my girlfriend, who's not the fastest player, can dominate a small world in a 1 1/2 hours.

Oh, and my victories are from nearly all kinds of victories, conquest, domination, but most from space races or cultural (ending around 1950 -2020, usually).

It depends on the difficulty lvl of the game.. on the last 2 settings you need more micro in order to win against the computer. You need to be more active and most of the time you can´t play a peaceful builder game.

additionally i always play with tech trading disabled -> tech progress is much slower.

But 40+ hours is a really long time.... on a normal Pangea map without tech trading and on a high difficulty lvl i think ~3-6h is more realistic

I love quick play it easily allows me to finish games within a week and I also don't quit right away if things are going back as the great thing about Civ is the ability to turn the tide of war.

The big downside of course is tech, especially military ends up lasting only for a short period of time. You'll go from knight to gun powder to machine gun in a blink of an eye before you ever really use them fully.

I play on the largest maps so my games take forever. That's the way I like it.

Can't really tell if I'll like the interface until I use it. Lots of times I'll see screenshots and think "WTF?" but then when I actually get to try it out it works out fine.

I've been reading all the previews from E3; I am getting more excited. Really sounds like they've got a lot of cool new ideas.

Has anyone seen any preorder specials/deals for this? No interest in the $100 one, just regular edition.

Neat little feature of the upcoming game:

He also talked about a new interesting strategic view for the first time:

Quote:
One thing we didn’t even talk about in the demo is the strategy view. If you turn it on, it makes everything into a flat 2D hex grid – just like you’re playing a boardgame. Or, if you’re on a plane or something and you don’t want to worry about the high-end graphics, just turn on the grid and it’s totally playable on this 2D map. Like you’re playing Risk or something.
