do not like the lack of religion. It was done quite well in Civ IV. It's had probably the biggest effect on civilizations in real life outside of things like fire and electricity. Not sure how you can take that out. Also I thought the civics were great, and very well done. Not sure I like them being replaced, but 'social policies' just sounds the same to me, so hopefully...

Also: I think you should be able to have a few units per square, not the stacks of doom, and not just a single unit.

My roommate and I finished a 12+ hr Civ4 game last night. Thank goodness that you can resume save games in multiplayer!

so wuts up with the hex system over the old square tiles? is this why stacking is gone since tiles can be attacked from more directions now?

I think hexes make sense, you get more avenues of movement that way. Don't know if that's the reason for getting rid of stacks or if they wanted to get rid of the stack of doom, or both...

I don't think the stacks are that bad of a thing, especially if they have artillery done right. Artillery can turn stacks into targets instead of weapons. If I'm remembering civ3 right...?

it's to give actual individual terrain segments more importance and they are shifting the combat model about, looks more like wargame miniatures similar to the total war stuff.

If they include everything in the vanilla game, they have nothing left for the expansions

Hmmmm.... more directions with hex tiles? I count 6 possible directions. In Civ4 there are 8 possible directions because you could also move over the corner of a tile.
so in fact units can be attacked from less directions now with hex tiles.

Correct. Very poorly stated on my part. Said better - movement is about the same in any direction. On a square grid, diagonal is the equivalent of one vertical and one horizontal, sort of. The one thing I don't like on hex grids is when you have to move say, straight west, and you have to go slightly up and down the whole way.

Actually tiles can be attacked from fewer directions. Now they can only be attacked from 6 directions, versus 8 with square tiles.

Ugh. There is nothing worse than thinking about a good game coming out when it gets colder out when it is currently Winter.

SNORGLE!!!!!

I love simulating my inner desire to conquer Europe.

My favorite part is wiping out whatever Russian dictator they choose to represent that empire on every playthrough--whether it be by sending in hoards of spear men early on, or pandering to them for several centuries as a top ally only to shove several dozen nuclear warheads down their throats after zero provocation! Borders look somewhat unnatural with these hex tiles on those screenshots though..

Wow if this stuff is true then Civ V is going to be a completely different game then any of its predecessors! I'm going to experience complete culture shock when I buy this game.

http://www.civfanatics.com/ Recent Civ5 Previews

Swedish PC Gamer, as reported by Danielos: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=355764

About 50 persons are currently working on the game, which has been in development for over two years, but is now reaching the final phases.

City states:
These are small, AI-controlled civilizations. They never grow big and doesn´t desire to win. The player must choose if he is to be friendly, indifferent or hostile towards a city state. The attitude you has towards a particular city state will have a big effect on diplomacy. If for example your units is approaching a city state that have friendly relations with another civilization, he will warn you, and if you ignore them, there will be consequences.

Barbarians:
The barbarians originate from a barbarian city and will get more advanced units later in the game. You need to wipe out all barbarian cities to get rid of the barbarian hordes.

City expansion:
Borders does no longer expand in large areas, but one hex at a time. Remote hexes like marshes, forests and mountains will be harder to acquire.

Economy:
You can invest money in your neighboring hexagons, for example trying to acquire an important resource before your opponent.

Research:
You can also sign a research-deal with another civilization. This way, both civs will cooperate to reach the new technology and both will gain it when the discovery is made. This was included to encourage cooperation between civilizations.

Diplomacy:
The civilizations will have an all-new advanced AI. All opponents will have fixed characteristics. Based on this unique personality, every AI-player will have their own agenda, which the AI will use to plan how to best play to win the game. But there will also be a certain randomness to avoid having the AI be too easy to predict.

Computer Bild Spiele, as reported by Civinator: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=355763

Tech trading is abolished.

Alliances give special boni (per example the possibility for a quicker research of a technology)

Cut-out of religions as known in Civ 4 confirmed

Cities can grow bigger than in former versions of the civ series as they there are 3 tiles for a city in every direction to be worked on.

New troops must leave a city at once, as there is only one unit per tile

Distance fighters (archers, artillery and so on) can shoot over the front units, lakes and other tiles

One philosophy is to form front lines for battles far away from the cities.

GamePro, as reported by dc82: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=355773

Leaders/Civs
German leader: Otto von Bismark
China leader: Wu Zeitein/Zetein
American leader: Washington
Japanese leader: Oba Nobunaga
Arabian leader: Harun al-Rashid
Other confirmed leaders mentioned in the article (Genghis Khan, Caesar, Napoleon, Gandhi)

Units
Basic military units move two tiles in combat instead of one.

Be sure to read the rest of those threads as there is lots of new info!

Tech trading abolished? Cut out Religion? I don't like those two. Otherwise looking forward to it.

Yeah, lack of religion sucks ass. Just wondering if they don't want to offend anybody. They can always include non real world religions...
