I focus on economy mainly. It's also easy to stage for other victories if you choose the right buildings and use the great people properly. You def need a military for protection...but I've won games without any offensive military action. I also find using Epic game length instead of normal makes for a better overall game. My 0.02.

Hmm. . . Darius just invented the UN and gave all 10 votes to Boudica (who was in last place) gifting her a victory, seemingly to spite everyone else who was doing well. That's either weird AI or scarily human.

are the reduced upgrade/tile purchase costs a part of the expansion, or were those changes introduced before? Because it finally makes gold useful.

Happened to me yesterday at turn 460...

I was doing quite well being the second biggest Civ, +1100 Science, +550 Culture, +140 Faith and + 160 gold per turn (not golden age). I had 9 cities, over 20 Wonders, Great People popping at a nice rate, second greatest army, no one at war with me, 4 City-States friends and 2 allied, many declaration of friendship and "working together" stuff, gifted many Luxury ressources I had to spare...I was pacing at a nice rate until England (#1 in territory/cities and military force and probably at peace with lots of civs) built to UN.

She got 19 votes and that was it...40 turn till the end, dunno if I would have won but I was doing good...

How ddo you get votes with different Civs?

Think i'm gonna remove that victory condition in the next games...

As a long time fan of the series, I can say of all the civ games this one has grown on me slowly. At first I didn't like it. Getting past unit stacking is tough but now, not sure I would go back. Love the expansion.

The UI is simply awesome. Best by far.

Can anyone comment on whether they did anything to improve time between turns late in games?

Hard to say - I can't really remember, but I'm rarely waiting more than 5 to 10 seconds on stock i5-2500. How bad was it?

I have a phenom 9850 and on large or above maps, later in the game it was 30-45 seconds between turns.

I'm having a lot more fun with this expansion. Trying many new things I didin't tried vanilla.

The only thing I don't really know how it works is Religion...what's the point of founding and spreading a religion if you can't win with this?

Any would like to explain the benefits of religion and spreading your own please?

So far the religion aspects seem to be a little extra bonus here and there. You can use the faith points you generate to buy units, buildings that generate happiness or culture, and eventually great people. There are also some bonuses to be had from spreading your religion to other players with some religion picks - e.g. extra money/culture.

What there doesn't seem to be so far is the diplomatic aspects that religions had in Civ 4 (e.g. AI players with the same religions would tend to be more friendly towards each other.)

While I support the desire to check ratings in order to justify purchases, you really should read all the various reviews and make a decision based on that while ignoring numerical ratings. I'm finding that the rating system has been highly perverted into a marketing tool, with winners and losers being arbitrarily chosen by fan boys, developers and professional reviewers alike. All games are abused by the mood of the critic, amateur and professional alike.

I've seen bland derivative titles being lauded as groundbreaking and arguably better titles being demoted to bargain bin classification, either because they didn't move as many units or the marketing was less penetrating.

My point is you should buy games on the basis of whether or not it interests you, whether the percieved value/price ratio meets your approval and whether or not you have the free money to buy it. There are plenty of people posting in these forums and on various other websites in which to derive an educated assessment as to the popularity and quality of the game, whichever way you deem it.

Screw that score. Not picking on you though. There is a growing epidemic of people who only buy games based on some number on the screen, and the sad part is they are likely missing out on great games in favor of derivate titles just because they don't have the guts to take a chance. I myself was guilty of this, so don't take it personal.

Just finished an awesome game on Prince (diff. 4), epic length with the Dutch.

Like all my games (probably my play style lol) I started slow and only founded 4 cities in my first 100+ turns (can't recall the exact number).

But then it started to go well, I founded many cities and built the % and + production buildings before many others. Got in the Tradition Policy tree first, then some in Honor, Commerce and Patronage. By the last 1/3 of the game I put some in Autocracy since many civs started to denounce me.

I finished by almost annihilating Austria (stole it's capital and destroyed 7 other cities). Traded lots of luxury ressources with the other civs.

By the last 100 turns many civs started to build the spaceship and that got me nervous.

I finally managed to outlast them till the end, turn 750, winning with 1875 points. My best game so far.

Next one gonna be at difficulty 5 and epic...dunno which civ though.

Thats one of my major complaints with Civ5 and it runs a polar opposite to my play style. A 'large' empire in Civ4 would be dozens of cities. A 'large' empire in Civ5 is 4-6 cities. And you're penalized heavily if you expand beyond that. Its irritating as fvck.

In all the Civ4 games I've played, I've only destroyed captured cities on a few occasions. Its almost always better to capture then and expand your territory.

I'm passing on the Civ5 expansion myself, but I expect it'll be much much cheaper in a few months. Might pick it up on a Steam sale with some of the DLC packs if I can get them all for under 10 bucks.

An issue I have with all the Civ games is that I like to play one type of nation, that just grows, develops tech, has freedom for citizens - no declaring war, no gouging other countries, no focring things on other countries - and this doesn't really fit any of the victory conditions, except ending up defaulting to the space race, which wasn't really optimized for either (not oppressing people for economic gain).

So the type of nation I like to play doesn't fit that well in the game.

Play on on any of the Island water maps where you can get a continent/island to yourself.
Turn off all the victory conditions, or all off but Time victory?

Or you can play at the lower difficulties and the AI will leave you alone.

But yeah, it's not really a builder game...it is, but only to an extent.

On topic, i absolutely love this expansion.
It has improved so many things from vanilla and made it much harder to game the system against the AI somewhat.

for Gods & Kings - I have enjoyed a lot of the tweaks they made for all the ages. The late game turns seem to be faster than reg civ 5. It seems barbs are much more common early on, so it's a bit more work early to defend your city expansion.

I do enjoy the added aspects of spying .+ religion, but I really think / hope they would flesh they out a bit more. Spying should have other options for slowing production / gold / unhappiness / incite riots, and what not.

I think it'd be cool if there was more control of how religion spreads. I did notice the religious aspect to spread religion faster caused a huge impact of my religion spreading to places pretty far on the standard map. I really wish they'd add a religious victory that requires X number/percent of religious cities as well as a huge raw faith amount to have a religious victory. It could trigger whatever each religion has for its end game belief. It could be customizable like the aspects of the religion or just completely vague and unspecific.

I feel there is a tiny chance a patch may add more to some elements of the expansion, but I'm certainly not going to be surprised if it never comes. I know there is an SDK for civ 5 on steam tools but I haven't looked into it. If there is a way to add some of those features in it'd be incredible.
