Classic JRPG lovers; what would you want in a new game?

Hey guys,

Was thinking about something today. Say someone went and made a new JRPG in the SNES/GBA style, playable on PC. What kind of things would you want in it and what would you not want in it? Certain things to think about are story/setting, skills/abilities, party member types, certain features (time travel? different planets, etc?)

This thread need not apply for those who don't like JRPG's.

A good story. Maybe a bit of crafting. Also please, no more emo characters. Rather they stay silent like Chrono or the main characters in the persona series.

Basically Final Fantasy 6, 7 or 9 with much hotter chicks, great graphics and a story line thats inappropriate in nature.

This. Thats all. Just a video of 16 bit bouncy tits.

Maybe a sensible UI that didnt require 1000 clicks to get anything done?

This. Mouse is still superior for managing stuff. I was not happy when Bethesda gimped the menu in Oblivion.

As for me, I'd settle for a remake of FF7 for the PS3 and/or Windows. Heck, I'd settle for a reissue of FF7 classic that just worked better with WinXP and Win7.

Thanks for some of the feedback guys.

A friend and I are making a classic, SNES style RPG, so any ideas/likes/dislikes are greatly appreciated.

Obviously, this will not be FFVII:Remake

Anything else you guys can think of?

I would like a believable storyline and plot. Mostly, I would like the characters to be believable, and not just completely evil, or completely good. That their actions actually make sense in the context of the story line.

I would love a SNES FF3 style combat (turn based), verus the Zelda style combat (real time), but both are fun. The Zelda style combat is already available in Destinia, and it just gets so repetitive.

Well what do you have so far?

A silent, non-emo protaginist
Crafting
No sappy love story
A catastrophic world destroying event and being able to continue playing
Different endings
Cast any spell on anyone
Map based secrets
change looks of main character
choose from multiple members
Armor/weapon look changes

And I've heard both on a realistic story but also a fantasy story. Will probably going more toward one where a group is considered *evil*, but really they're just a more powerful army than what the main character belongs to.

have you considered straying from the traditional good vs evil storyline? You don't have to save the world, or be a rebel with a cause. I've always considered games like fallout where you can choose to be a prick to be more realistic than "Oh I must save that baby from the burning building." Have you considered a scenario where the bad guys win and you have to work with what you're left with?

Also combination spells could be interesting. I've always considered chrono trigger's dual and triple arts to be something that's been sorely missing in the newer games.

Agree on the second part.

On the first part, however, that's kind of a staple of the JRPG. They're also two different type of games: open games like Fallout 3+ are capable of this because of how they're played. With a JRPG, if you can't "defeat the *bad* guys", what's your ultimate goal then, to survive? What kind of ending could there be to the game? There has to be an "end", otherwise you're just left with useless grinding.

edit:

We are playing with the idea, based on our storyline, where party members can be corrupted (even the main character), and they end up being the "evil" force instead of the original intended "bad guy(s)".

Old Final Fantasy games were good, but if you've never played Tales of Vesperia on the 360, then you simply haven't played the best JRPG ever made (unless CG cutscenes mean more to you then gameplay). Tales beats out FF in combat, gameplay, customization; you name it.

I'd love to see a Tales game on the PC.

Yeah, that's great for the 360. Please stay on topic

You can always end the game on a bad note. There are always creative ways to end a story without the hero rescuing the girl, the world becomes a better place, etc etc. You can still have a final boss, all the level up and shabeng. I agree that it won't be the traditional jrpg storyline, but unless you're also working for JRPG storyline on top of JRPG gameplay elements I don't feel like it'd be a bad thing to throw a different story.

I agree, but then the player leaves the game without a feeling of accomplishment. Oh shit, those 30 hours I spent didn't matter because I lose? No matter what I did I just die and the world is taken over, or we lose our fight and I'm stuck just being a nobody now?

I agree that the story doesn't have to be cliche, but I also think the ending should be a sense of reward for your journey there, instead of it crapping on your face and saying "hah you were never going to win, sorry"

i like the happy-sad endings. It is under-used, and is awesome for RPGs.

it's like: "we won! finnaly we defeated him....but look at what we had to do just to defeat him"....even getting the victory, everyone is actually sad

--Truly lovable characters with real personality.

--Engrossing, lengthy story with plenty of twists and turns. It doesn't have to reinvent the wheel, but it should be compelling nonetheless.

--Awesome, classic JRPG musical score.

Take care of those 3, and I'll likely enjoy the game, no matter what the graphics, cutscenes, or card playing mini games are.

The Last Remnant 2, but instead of playing as Rush, we get to play as the Conqueror... like we were originally supposed to do.

If a SNES style RPG came out on the PC, would you be willing to play it KB only (arrow keys to move, z and x for confirm/cancel), and if not would you be willing to download xpadder to map your controller to those keys for the game?

I wonder because being able to code in controller support is looking to be out of my ability range
