Yikes you guys definitely ripped me . Yeah, I know I need a haircut... lol... I have been to lazy to get it done the past month or so because of school... I have no real excuse for that, I guess. BUT, that is on my to-do list for my winter break.

I actually own some pretty nice shoes and none of my jeans are "baggy", but not tight either (eww). I would like to get some nice button down shirts that could be used for the corporate workplace and on casual outings to restaraunts and lounges. A really big problem that I have with long-sleeve button-up shirts is that there is a lot of extra shirt around my armpit AND the sleeves don't fit very well up against my arms (not very big arms). I just can't find a good shirt that fits me. Would it be stupid to have my shirts tailored?

And especially with jeans... its definitely very hard for me to find a good pair of jeans that fit nicely. My waist is usually 32" and the inseam should be 34" or 35".

Most people can't though so it depends the type of people you encounter and if you care.

It'd be even more convincing if you knew how to spell "connoisseur".

And why would you compare "Express" to "Neiman Marcus" since the former is a label/brand whereas the latter is a department store?

Because some people actually think Express is nice.

You need Slim Fit shirts. Most places sell slim versions of their regular shirts. BR comes to mind

Cut the hair for sure, makes you look like a big douchebag like most kids with that hair.

As for the button up/dress shirts I can help. I'm slim and muscular and normal dress shirts are way to baggy just about everywhere but the shoulders on me.

Check out the "fitted" dress shirts. I usually go with Alfani from Macys but they have other brands as well.

This although Express is more metro and then H&M is really metro. Of course you can still try to get something decent there, but classy is definitely BR. JCrew is classy. So is

Since you say you are 22, definitely steer into those stores. I'm 22 myself too and those are the stores I love. While I still do have stuff from AE, A&F and Hollister which I save for hanging out with friends, I do wear a lot of Express, BR, Gap, H&M to work, and occasionally with friends.

Try Gap or Express for jeans. BR is nice too but why pay premium? Plus, my 2 pairs of Gap jeans and 2 pairs of Express jeans have outlived my BR jeans which ripped in a year only (WTF), and is now unwearable to work.

BR used to have online deals or their outlet, I can't remember. I used to work for their parent company which got me a discount. I miss that.

No! Most people don't realize that an off the rack shirt doesn't fit correctly, whether it be sleeve length, circumference under the armpits or the waist. I understand though, that for most people it seems excessive to pay for a decent tailor (say, $15 which isn't that bad) when the shirt itself only cost $30 or $40. That said, a properly fitted shirt (which for your body type would be nearly impossible to find off the rack) makes a world of difference. I would say that I take 3 out of 4 dress shirts to the tailor - but I'm definitely more into fashion than most men. and sometimes women.

So I will bet you can appreciate how far a great pair of shoes can go.

yes too all, although I haven't had any luck with H&M as their clothes are a bit quirky and just do not seem to have the quality of the other mentioned stores.

Hmm...."Class". It's not necessarily the clothes that create the aura of class, it's how the person carries himself in those clothes.

There are plenty of stores that sell "Classy" clothes, as many here have mentioned. Instead of using the term "classy", think about clothes that would be considered "timeless". These are the clothes you want to draw yourself to when looking for an upscale look.

You don't see trends in classy stores. Well, let me take that back. While there might be a color, or a particular cut, that may be "popular" and marketed from one season to the next, you'll rarely (if ever) see upscale stores hop on the trendy bandwagon.

Banana Republic didn't sell baggy jeans when they were in style. They don't sell skinny jeans for men now. They sell pants that fit with few variations (boot-cut, straight, tailored, etc.) depending on the man's build and preference. The clothes I purchased from BR 5-6 years ago are still very much current today. Hell, my favorite pair of jeans, that I still get compliments on, are a nice pair of BR straight-fit jeans that I purchased nearly 6 years ago.

Hell, and as others mentioned, you can get some great deals on really nice clothes at a lot of these stores, just be a sales-shopper. We don't have many stores in Alaska, but we do have a Banana Republic. I'd say 60% of my wardrobe is from them, and I've never paid full price. You just have to be a smart shopper.

Good luck!

I have three weeks before school starts again. I'm very excited to spend a couple or three days at the department stores to re-do my wardrobe. I hope that I can find some killer Christmas deals and end up with some great clothes.

Most of their stuff is quirky or downright retarded/emo looking. On the rare occasion though, they will have some pretty nice short-sleeve dress shirts. Their dress section is nice too if you're short, puny or slim. Don't go there if you're bulked up and tall.

Okay.. well, I'm not sure where to find these slim fit shirts?

OH, and Lola, you asked if I was working or in school. I'm doing both right now. I intern for a corporation part-time and then go to school full time.

I tend to hang out with "straight" people, and as such they are not able to spot the difference between two random brands "a mile away".

Any advice is appreciated... thanks!

Abercrombie is classy when you're 12 years old. Also, you don't have to shop at expensive, name-brand, trendy stores to look good. Any department store will have what you're looking for. Collared shirts + well-fitting jeans/khakis + a nice jacket without a brand name on it = win.

Yeah.... That's basically what Lola said earlier in the thread. People seem too brand oriented. To some, it seems, unless you're a walking billboard, you're not dressed properly.

I wouldn't even bother with a place like Macy's until they start the 75% sale on clothes.

Paul Frederick online has an outstanding selection of trim fit shirts. Like you I am tall and thin and most shirts that stores sell fit like an old potato sack.

My recommendation for shirts is to purchase a few trim fit button down/regular cuff shirts in solid white, gray and black (keep away from the stripey stuff!) as you can dress any of those colors up or down. I prefer the 80/20 no iron blend as they look as fresh at 8:00 pm as when you put them on in the morning, and pair up very well with BR or JCrew pants (casual or dress). They have other cuff/collar options if your tastes run along a different line.

Yes, they do cost around $50 each but they are of superb quality and last forever if you properly care for them. They have sales all the time and you can get them "buy 2, get one free" at pretty regular intervals thru the year.

The most important thing is that you wear clothes that are comfortable and that you feel confident in wearing... regardless of any advice given here.
