Clawhammer or Newcastle

This is the processor that I purchased about a month ago. It went off newegg for a while but now it's back and $20 more...

Newegg says it's a clawhammer with a 512KB L2 cache. This confuses me because I thought all clawhammers were 200MHz slower than their Newcastle counterparts, but they had a 1MB cache.

So I downloaded SiSoftware Sandra and this is the info that I got:

maybe it's one of the new .09µ amd64 chips... if so, you are one lucky fvck. another option is that it could be one of the clawhammers that doesnt really work right and has half of the cache disabled, which is more likely.

It's a Clawhammer with half the L2 cache disabled, they were available months before the actual Newcastle CPUs went on sale.

Why is it priced $20 more than the newcastle if it runs at the same speed and has the same cache size? Is there some other advantage of the Clawhammer core?

It's a ClawHammer with 1/2 of the L2 disabled. Those came out a little before the actual Newcastles. CeilingHoles, no, there's no advantage in getting a 512K L2 ClawHammer over a Newcastle. Why then is it priced more? Supply and demand, probably.

Interesting... The link you have is definately to a ClawHammer, but the SiSoft/CPU-Z info you posted is identical to my 3000+, which i know to be a NewCastle.

If I had to guess, I'd say you've got a link to a clawhammer, but you bought a NewCastle. I am 100% positive mine is a NewCastle, and if anyone wants to hear it, I've got a pretty good idea that the Processor you've IDed here (with SiSoft/CPU-Z) is also a NewCastle.

Reason 1:According to this article: http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2027, the NewCastle Athlon64s have a core ID of FC0, as opposed to F4A for the ClawHammers
Note the "Revision/Stepping: C/0" from SiSoft and the "Family/Model/Stepping: FC0" from CPU-Z. My feeling is that those mean the same thing and they refer the to the Core ID of FC0, which would be a NewCastle.

Reason 2: SiSoft reports it as a 90nm ClawHammer. As far as I know, AMD has not actually released ANY 90nm processors yet. (I know newegg doesn't have any). Since we know at least something in the line from SiSoft:
"Name : MC Athlon 64 (K8 ClawHammer) 90nm 2GHz+ 1.45-1.55V "
is wrong (the 90nm) bit, I would not be surprised to find that the ClawHammer part is wrong too.

Although, I guess the only way we'll know for certain is if someone who knows he or she has a ClawHammer 3000+ posts the SiSoft and CPU-Z for their processor.

actually... the best way to tell for certain what the processor is would probably be to take the heatsink off and compare it (the SKU specifically) to this: http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=1937
since that's from AT's review of the 3000+ ClawHammer revision...

It also appears as though I'll have to eat my words in reference to the 90nm A64s not shipping... just saw the posts in the forum that the HAVE shipped... although i don't know where to find them online yet... (which still means you couldn't have bought it a month ago...)

if it really is a 90 nano chip i would be very interested in some overclocking results. i'm not sure why AMD would make a 90 nano clawhammer though, i thought AMD intended on killing off clawhammer production for the cheaper to produce newcastles?

Shouldn't be a .09 since those should run with a lower voltage no? And only the mobile 90nm ones have shipped, not the desktop ones if I'm correct.

How do you endable the rest of the L2 cache? My 64 3000+ is stock at 2.0Ghz but only shows a 512k L2 cache. Sandra also says it's a ClawHammer.
