I fail to see any benefit in using a regitry cleaner. It definitely won't help performance and they could cause tons of problems.

I agree with the speed issue, whatever theoretical speed is gained by reducing slightly the size of the Registry is usually unnoticeable.

However, WinXP Registry, with time, gets loaded with a lot of trash and can end up with conflicts. So it is Not a bad idea to periodically clean it up.

There is am inherit risk in any of the Registry programs, they might entries that you need.

Therefore, whatever you use makes sure that:

1. It lets you review the content before you delete, look at the list and try to judge as best as you could the content of what is going to be deleted.

2. It has an Undo capacity. So it would be possible to reverse the Deletion.

I tried many of these and settled on running periodically these two.

$12.95, http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegSupreme_d4001.html

Program looks good to me. Hm...It's showing multiple duplicated in the Cygwin folder, which I know is an important folder. Is it safe to delete these duplicates?

CCleaner is a good program. It is small and fast. Here is a link to the site were you can look it over. It has a good following and is been updated all the time, adding new items as other programs change. The program does the things JackMDS talked about above, which you should do too.

I don't recommend using RegClean. It cleaned out some entries that looked like stuff I wanted still in there. Thankfully it saved a backup. CCleaner is just awesome though.

If your registry is that loaded, I would say it is time for a reformat.

yeah but most users probably never bother with that.
i think the general idea is that a regular cleaning (as well as other measures) would help casual users not have to worry about that kind of thing.

Do you know how to backup and restore your registry?

Do you know how to do the same if you've done something that prevents your computer from booting?

If you said yes to both, right on!

If you said no to EITHER, then regcleaners and registry tweaking in general is not for you.

I use Registry First Aid, & like it,.

Computer definitel runs noticeably better after cleaning out old registry junk.

The free version only cleans about 10 bad entries at a time.

I bought it so it cleans all at once. Well worth the $21 fee.
