Back in the day, I remember concerns about static electricity problems.

This was back when being able to see in your computer was new and cool.

If you are talking about the totally clear acrylic cases - they are a pain to work with if you are used to popping the side off your computer frequently to mess around with it.

I wouldn't suggest it if you plan to tinker around in your computer. Don't they have issues with cooling as well? I don't know.

I HAVE A FEW FRIENDS THAT HAVE CLEAR ACRYLIC CASES. THEY SAY ITS A PAIN IN THE ASS TO KEEP IT CLEAN, AND SCUFF-FREE. ALSO, MOST OF THEM ARE NOT WELL DESIGNED.

hey.. why am I typing in caps?

Some people say that the clear plastic cases don't provide enough RF sheilding, meaning your PC may cause minor electronmagnetic interference or might be affected by some other outside interference.

Chances are this sort of thing could only be measure in an anechoic test chamber and probably isn't enough to cause problems from the average PC user.

but, it also has poor heat transfer. it will run considerably hotter than an steel case with the same ventilation. also, forget about tool free. i have yet to see a tool free well designed acrylic case. besides they look a little too tacky for me.

I have this one:

It really is pretty cool and I would recommend it if you're in it for the looks and don't plan on taking the sides off much. I haven't had any scuffing problems and you need to blow the dust out every now and then just like any other computer. It's also kind of difficult to keep the little drive cover thingies in the empty bays since they are just pressed in - not attached with any hardware.

i've seen a light red one that might as well have been pink.

Also, consider getting a clear/semi clear and getting red cold cathodes that look pink. Good effect.

The only reason I would go with an acrylic case is to design my own compact sized one as standard cases have poor layouts with lots of wasted space. I would prolly use an opaque material and perhaps paint the inside as well. Either way scratches would not be a problem.

They are easily scratched and attract dust but can be cleaned up with Novas Acrylic cleaner. I wouldn't worry about the RF sheilding factor and although I haven't purchased one I do have a Custom Build

All the criticisms are valid - but, placement is another consideration. My towers are all on the floor UNDER my desks - so they are simply not seen or even heard much. A clear case or even a clear door would serve no useful purpose - as there would be no one to look at it except maybe an itinerant roach or scorpion.

Plexiglass just scratches too much. Unless you're a jeweller and like polishing with watch crystal compound to get them all out, just best to get a metal case.

If you can find one that's made out of polycarbonate that would be better, but it'll still scratch.

Plexi is fine for doors and blowhole tops, but for an entire case it's just too fragile -- no way will the seams take much stress, like turning it over to work inside.

Here's a crazy idea.. what about a PC case, that is transparent, *and* double-hulled? IOW, what about creating a case, that looks like a fish-tank (A real working one, actually), with a center section inside (probably covered with a mirror facing outside), and then the "guts" of the PC would be inside the "hidden" inner section. That would be kind of neat. Probably wouldn't be too practical though.

I know someone who has an acrylic case. He loved it at first, but changed his mind. He did say he could stand on it without it breaking... no idea why someone would stand on their computer though...

I guess the dirt and etc just showed up really well, and it wasn't designed well so it took forever to install a new HD or something similar. He also added a bunch of CCFL's, stickers and LED fans to make it look cooler. I think he failed in that though, looks uglier.
