The e6600 was $70 and the e6320 was $40 and each came in just the plastic clamshell. I assume these are returns as I don't think retail stores normally sell OEM chips. Of course, being Fry's they could have lied to me and have a pallet of new retail boxes in the back and are laughing at the fool who bought returned oem chips over a box...

So my questions are these; the receipt says 1 year warranty on each, do I go through intel for this warranty? And if so, did the warranty start the day they were manufactored or does it go by sale date?

I'm not sure if I should keep them since I don't have a spare mobo to test them right now and I don't feel like taking apart my e8400 setup I just finished (anyone have a link for a cheap, decent 775 mobo?).

Thanks for the update, Spike. You saved me a trip.

I've seen Frys sell OEM chips before so I wouldn't be surprised if yours are OEM. Let me know if you decide to sell the E6600.

Nope. The guys at the Irving store told me the same thing, but when I called Arlington, they said they were all sold. All of the Core 2 Duo clearance items in DFW were sold out by 12:30pm (assuming that the information I got over the phone was correct).

On the bright side, I was able to get some Athlon 64 3500+ Socket AM2 retail box processors (all of them were open box) for $15 each, along with some Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Socket AM2 retail box processors (all sealed) for $35 each.

There's no reason why retail stores can't sell OEM chips. Fry's and Microcenter do it all the time.

If a retail box processor has been returned, it will still be in the box when Fry's sells it to the next customer. (It might be perfectly pristine, or it might look like it has been shipped to China and back.) If an item has been returned, Fry's is required to label it as such, and they're pretty good about doing that. So you should be able to tell exactly what you're getting.

Fry's offers a 15-day return policy on all processors. As long as you don't break off any pins, you can return the processor for any reason. After 15 days, retail box processors must be returned to the manufacturer for warranty claims. Intel requires proof of purchase, so I assume they go by the date of purchase. OEM processors are covered directly by Fry's for one year from the date of purchase. Most retailers offer similar terms.

Thanks for the info though I'm still worried about these. They are not even open box, just in the plastic clamshell cases. Also, it's fairly obvious they have both been used as the corners are slightly worn down on both of them. I hope to get a new board sometime in the 15 day window to do some testing on these to make sure they actually post.

does the renton fry's have cheap 755 board, i saw some 965 boards at the frys for 30 i think

I got the last E6300 at the Frys on Thunderbird Ave in Phoenix or so the sales person said.

Ha ha, I'm so dumb, I looked to be sure the pins weren't bent.

Can anyone suggest a good, cheap mobo match for my new... Oh, buns! I don't have a pci-x video card.

Holy crap, all the pins are broken off
Take a look at the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard. It sells for about $90.00

All of Fry's OEM processors are packaged in plastic clamshell cases. (I presume they receive their "tray" processors in big trays and put them in the clamshell cases themselves.) The clamshell case can be very hard to open, so if it has been opened before, there's a good chance that it will be stretched/torn and deformed.

As for wear and tear on the processor, I don't know what you saw, but in my experience it's not uncommon for brand new processors (OEM or boxed) to have marks on them--they might even look as though the corners have been "filed down". I draw the line at scratches, fingerprints, and traces of thermal compound, which prove to me that the processor has actually been used before.

How cheap, and what sort of quality are you looking for?

Fry's has a few refurbished Abit motherboards in stock for prices anywhere from $25 to $60. They also have some ECS motherboards on clearance. For example, I saw an ECS 671T-M (SiS 671 chipset) for $29.90 just yesterday. They also have the Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2 on clearance for less than $55.

I've had good luck with the ECS G31T-M, and for the price I paid for it (i.e., practically free with the purchase of a CPU), I'm actually quite happy with it. If you're interested in doing the opposite of what most Fry's customers do, you could buy a CPU/motherboard combo with ECS G31T-M and sell the processor for very close to what you paid for the combo and keep the motherboard. It would be strange, but you could do it.

Thanks for the info. The "filed down" corners was exactly what I noticed on both cpu's. One of them looks like it has part of a fingerprint on it but I can't tell for sure. There is no trace of thermal compound or any scratches so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

The one I got from fry's is batch L640A. Primed for 4 hours at 400 x 9 with 1.44 vcore (with drops). Overclocks better than my previous E4500. Only difference is the E6600 idles #2 about 3-5c's higher and 1-3c's on loads. Seems to be common and not something to worry about.

The Downers Grove, IL store said they are out of both.

If anyone is upgrading from a Celeron D/Pentium D/Pentium 4, please give me specifics as I need an older processor for a board that I have.

Thanks,
EH

Fry's in Austin, TX has no C2D left. They did have A64-3200 939 for $10. Some dude bought all 13 of them while I was there. The only thing left is FX62 for $160.
