The West Virginian legislature overrode the governor's veto, strong objections from officers in the State Police and other branches of law enforcement, and even, according to some public opinion polling, their own constituents, and have voted to allow concealed carry for those over 21 with no training and no permit whatsoever.

My commentary? Yikes! D:

It will soon be legal for adults in West Virginia to carry hidden handguns with no training and without a permit, after the Legislature acted swiftly, and against the wishes of law enforcement, to override Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s veto of the legislation.

[...]

Tomblin issued a statement immediately after the override, condemning the Legislature’s actions.

“West Virginia’s law enforcement officers have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe and helping us in times of need, and it’s disheartening that the members of the Legislature have chosen not to stand with these brave men and women – putting their safety and the safety of West Virginians at risk,” Tomblin said. “It’s unfortunate that the concerns of officers from every law enforcement branch in the state, including the West Virginia State Police and university campus police officers, have been ignored by today’s action.”

Sen. Corey Palumbo, D-Kanawha, noted that public opinion polling was overwhelmingly against allowing permitless concealed weapons

Thank God the citizens of West Virginia can now rest just a bit more comfortable in the knowledge that their untrained neighbors will be packing heat without jumping through any of those frustrating bureaucratic hoops. After all, more guns = more safety; and that's a fact.

There are seven other 'constitutional carry' states that pretty much allow you to carry without a class / license. I say it's a good thing.

What you don't understand is that guns are embedded in their way of life like Israel. The kids grow up with them hunting like with their dad at very young ages with no problems. Have you ever been to WV? It's mainly woods and mountains and I've lived there for awhile living off the land. Their largest city has 50,000 people and they have the oldest average age of any state - most of them are either sick and/or old and the ones who aren't are mountain men with families. While ideally you would like for them to get some training, it's not a big deal. Here's another tidbit: you can buy weapons off the black market with zero background checks. That's why it's funny when neighboring states like MD/VA/PA are passing stricter gun laws. Anyone who wants to get a gun can easily go to WV and buy one off an ad in the paper/craigslist no questions asked. More faux outrage from city liberals who want to tell mountain men how to live in the mountains.

Cletus can now carry concealed in WV ... but not on the Capitol grounds. Yes, those brave legislators are OK with guns at most public venues, but not theirs.

What you don't understand is that guns are embedded in their way of life like Israel.

What you don't understand, or even seem to know, are the gun laws in Israel:

Civilians must obtain a firearms license to lawfully acquire, possess, sell, or transfer firearms and ammunition.

ln addition, those applying for permission to possess firearms must meet certain age requirements:

20 for women who completed military service or civil service equivalent
21 for men who completed military service or civil service equivalent
27 for those who did not complete military service or civil service equivalent
45 for residents of East Jerusalem.

To obtain a firearms license, an applicant must be a resident of Israel for at least three consecutive years, pass a background check that considers the applicant's health, mental, and criminal history, establish a genuine reason for possessing a firearm (such as self-defense, hunting, or sport), and pass a weapons-training course. The Israeli government maintains an official registry of all residents with firearms licenses.[22]

All those holding firearms licenses must renew them and re-take a shooting course at a gun range every three years and pass a psychological exam every six years.[23] They must demonstrate they have a safe at home in which to keep the firearm. Permits are given only for personal use, not for business in the firearms sale while holders for self-defense purposes may own only one handgun, and are given a lifetime supply of 50 bullets to take home.[24]

So, yeah, nice analogy . . . except for the whole licensing, residency requirements, background check, criminal history check, mental history check, need to provide a genuine reason, weapons-training requirement, national registry, recurring shooting course, recurring psychological exam, home safe requirement, limit of ONE HANDGUN, and lifetime limit of 50 bullets.

You took it a bit literally there. I meant in the sense that they are around guns their entire life. In any case, it will be a fantastic experiment to see if crime actually does drop when "everyone knows everyone else is packing heat".

Off the land? Cool. Where, and how long?

And, yes, I've been to WV untold times. I live only 5 hours away from Morgantown. I've camped before in the Monogahela National Forest, and I have friends in the state whom I've visited more than once . . . in the boonies roughly close to Webster Springs and in the boonies of Randolph County south of Elkins. One family owns naught but a .22 hunting rifle, and the other extended group fairly much do live "off the land," but don't own any guns, by choice.

I have no comment as to whether this is a good idea or bad, but I find it weird that the legislature passed this against the wishes of the people. More broken govt.

So I can't carry a knife with a blade longer than 3 1/2" but it's now ok to carry a concealed pistol? Why would I bring a knife to a gun fight?

I figure a couple of people or cops will get shot and/or a couple of school scares and they will rethink their decision.

"the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"

The 2nd Amendment is not changing. GTFO of the USA if you're scared of average Americans carrying guns.

If anti-gun communists cared more about changing the "thug-life" culture instead of trying to institute a nanny state they might have more luck with reducing gun violence.

Wait so does this mean gang members can walk around armed and not be breaking the law?

You do realize that gang members walk around carrying guns in every part of the country regardless of what the law is right? Those gun laws sure work great in Chicago! To bad your average joe has to depend on the cops to protect him there...

Point is you could arrest them for carrying a gun.
Again does this law mean a gang can carry concealed pistols legally?

Point is, they did nothing wrong, carrying a gun.

You could arrest them for robbing a bank, or something.

Usually there's a law against a felon having a gun, not sure about WV. If they've never committed a crime and there arent anti gang laws (LA) then of course they can carry a gun.

I live in a legal open carry and concealed carry state. People dont walk around pulling guns out and/or shooting people. Amazing I know.
