There is a much, much easier way.

Step 1, download Mozilla from mozilla.org (or preferably from one of its mirrors).

Step 2, go to Edit->Preferences, open Advanced and select "Scripts & Windows"

Step 3, uncheck the box Open Windows by themselves, your done.

Another one of my favorites in Mozilla, right-click on any image and select "block image" to get rid of
all those pesky banners.

I use Popup killer. its free, and has a downloadable database with most of the offenders automatically blocked. and it is pretty much fully customizable and has cool options.

Many thanks for the links.

I've tried Pop-Up Killer and was slightly underwhelmed. In my experience, it was only about 50/50 on the killin' part. :Q

I still get the X-10 pop-ups, but they self-destruct a moment later. Still wastes my bandwidth, but I don't get carpel tunnel syndrome from clicking the mouse to close the window.

Thanks for the post, FrugalGuy. Great suggestions for killers. Am I the only one who always(!) gets that colonize pop up?

Thanks frugalguy for the links. I probably won't go that route because I don't trust any ad cookies, even opt-out ones.

Webwasher is an awesome freeware, although not great for popups. The global setting of "accept" or "refuse" popups is to broad and I often have to toggle it to get legitimate popups.

And thanks for the POW tips, I'm going to check that out. It sounds like it avoids domain-specific popups.

But they always have at least on scantily clad woman in the X-10 ads (I wonder what they're alluding to). I don't know if I really want to give that up

I second that, I use proxomitron for quite a while now and it filters out the ads before they even get a chance to download
very nice.

Frugalguy, those links seem to be static html... anybody else wanna verify this? it doesn't seem like it actually does anything.

but, i do use POW and it works fine for me, just need to keep updating it which i guess is pretty annoying sometimes. i just downloaded proxomitron though and i'm trying it right now

i'm pretty sure these links aren't static...except for maybe 247media. Anyways, it looks like technoerotica.net was the original source of this and it also looks like they're going to update this list. Don't worry it's not a porn site

I use pop up stopper, and its great. Im using an older version, and it is absolute, no explorer window opens, NONE, unless i hold control and let the window open. It looks like the never version works like pow, and you can build a database of allowed windows. Im going to check out pow, but i think people should check out pop up stopper as well.

between this and a cookie manager, i now run clean on the net. I just ran a ads aware program and i was clean as a whistle. Ahahahahah, now all i need is a good proxy and i can roam the internet like a ghost.
