I'm running Windows 2000 Profession SP2.

I used a combination of the hosts files availbile in this thread, and it did get rid of my pop ups
however, at least once a day "Services.exe" goes wild and starts using 99% of cpu for about 30 seconds, weird.

also, for those sites that use click-through links (linksynergy) then you might have to allow those :/

<<Anyone know how to kill the pop-ups Morpheus gernerates? >>

<<Now the popups are gone, I wish I had a good cookie manager. Does someone know any good one that support netscape 6>>

Have any of you tried using AdSubtract?. The pro version aloows you to customize cookies, pop-ups, advertisments, animations, referrers, and even java script for all websites or vary settings for each website. And yes, it does support Netscape.

Since using it I have not seen many ads and NO pop-ups. All this in an easy to use interface. You can also stop filtering by clicking on the icon in bottom right corner of the screen.

Check it out. The standard version is available as a free download. They charge for the pro version but I'm sure there are sites where you can find it for free.

I installed popup killers and it did a number on my system resources. Anyone have a similar experience or a better experience with other methods of controlling popups?

Yeah, on the site i linked, go to the ATTENTION windows 2000 users I think it is, its visible on the page there somewhere, you have to disable some services you dont need (I did it, no change) and it won't do that anymore.

Unless you're running a network and you need to use DHCP for clients or something.

Of the top of my head, i think it was disabling DNS client and DHCP server, but double check just in case.

something I clicked on seems to have broken IE 6.0 for me. Now anytime I click on a link (like here in the hot deals forums) to open a new window the link doesn apear for me, it just opens a blank IE 6.0 window with nothing in the adress bar.

Anyone know how to fix this?

When using the HOSTS file, how do you keep your browser from displaying blank ads? How do you set a link to display a page, without it timing out? When I go to sites now, it still displays the boxes where the ads should be. How do I get rid of those too?

I have edited my host file and it works well to eliminate the pop ups.
I have developed a problem with the anandtech site-hot deals. Once I click on a hot deal and look at it, I am no longer able to use the back key to go back to the main menu of the hot deals. Does anyone have an idea which host file might be the cause of this problem?
Also, How do you get rid of the "page cannot be displayed" image and just have a blank area on your screen. I downloaded edexter but cant seem to get it to work.

I was searching the forums for a good pop-up killer software and came across this thread. I was checking out all the links to software when I noticed this:

-----
PopUp Killer is no longer...
Sunday, Mar 03, 2002

Today is a sad day.

After numerous reports of problems with Internet Explorer from many new PopUp Killer users I have decided to discontinue my most beloved little baby.

-----

Dunno if anyone is still using PopUp Killer, but it's just a general FYI.

too bad they couldnt fix that.. it was decent.. but whenever i clicked on links from anandtech, or use my quicklaunch to open a new window, it would interpret that as a popup...

edit: opps. i guess that was already mentioned.. hmm. just trying out popup stopper and that seems like a solid program...

I've been using Proxomitron and I like it because you do not have to build up a database of sites for it to stop.

Actually the opposite is true: I have been building up a list of sites for it to Bypass.

I have PopupKiller running on another machine, XP, and it seems to be doing fine. It lets the popup briefly materialize, which is bad, but reminds you that there is actually killing going on. Proxomitron kills popups before they even appear, so you forget it is actually doing anything, it is so good!

These kinds of things should be built into browsers in the first place.

I whole-heartedly agree! Why for the love of God isn't there a 'disble pop-ups' button on IE!!! that lets you still use java, etc!

BTW thanks for all the info in this thread, very informative. Am trying Proximotron on my test box.
