Clicking Samsung hard drive, what does it mean?

The clicking is very random. It is as though a certain area of the disk has this issue where the disk will start clicking. The thing is, I've scanned it using diagnostic software and they all come out OK. No bad sectors or anything. If I'm hearing this distinct clicking noise, is it same to assume it's going bad? The computer does freeze up when this clicking occurs. Thanks in advance. Btw, this is in a regular Compaq desktop.

That is the "click of death". Your HDD is failing. Back up all important data now (as in, right now, don't even reply to my post before doing this). If you don't have another HDD, burn it to a CD/DVD.

I don't know what a "regular" Compaq is, but if the computer is still under warranty, you should be able to get a new HDD.

I think he summed up the siuation quite nicely. If you are reading my reply before backing up then I would highly suggest ceasing said activity and beginning the backup process :laugh:

If this is a new problem, then replace the HDD. Don't take chance with data.

Is there a diagnostic test that will specifically list the drive's faults in a situation like this?
