Good grief eski, you really believe Moon when he says that BILLIONS will die because of global warming? Is there a scientific basis for that claim? Is it testable? What is the difference between that and the nutter with the sign on the street crying end of days?

I have no idea what the number would be, but I do know that your argument that deaths don't matter because we all die someday was dumb.

I guess I'm a little late reading this but wanted to ask - a single scientist tells his theory to a computer magazine and we're all up in arms about it?

There is more than one author on the paper. Only people that refuse to read the abstract are up in arms about it

It's a peer-reviewed journal article, which is quite a bit more than some guy telling his theory to a magazine.

If you guessed global warming, you would have guessed RIGHT!

So these clowns expect us to take them seriously when they come up with SHIT like these. How the FUCK would a CLIMATE scientist know a damn thing more about the cause of the war than anybody else? Here the rest of the world thought it was due to the instability created by Bush by detonating the Middle East coupled with the massive influx of easy worldwide communication through the internet.... I guess the "scientists" know better. The hubris in this proclamation is frankly jaw dropping.

Those that post a source should read it and not give into CBD hysteria.

There is not a meaning to life. Life happened and we are lucky to be around.

Spoken like somebody who doesn't know what he feels. Hate to break it to you Bro, but life has a purpose and its purpose is its meaning.

200 years from now scientists will be able to pinpoint the exact cause of Climate Change because hindsight is 100% and predicting the future is not. Of course this will be from observations of Earth undergoing a Venus size greenhouse effect by the surviving Mars and Space colonies.

Got it, I see it now. I read the article, just didn't catch Wired's method of telling me there was a link buried in there.

Has everyone suddenly lost their faith in evolution? Homo Superians will look back to this cold time period and marvel at our ignorance and physical inferiority.

Venus's atmosphere is 96.50% carbon dioxide. Earth's atmosphere is 0.04% (even after a century of pumping CO2 into it). So you believe in 100 years that man can increase the CO2 that much? How is that going to happen when man only added 0.01% extra over the past 120 years?

Regarding your space fantasy. It costs MORE now to put a lb of payload into LEO than it did in the 60s. It was $3800/lb then. 50 years of technology has done nothing to make manned interpanetary space travel anything other than a pipe dream.

Maybe try to quote the actual journal article instead of a webpage trying to get hits?

From the actual synopsis. Putting theories out there in science isn't "hubris" and this certainly isn't the work of "clowns." Maybe if you had even bothered to take the 1 min needed to read and understand the freely available abstract in one click then you'd be better informed on what the article is doing. Droughts have long caused instability and if they tentatively showed that climate change may have caused these weather patterns then that is an amazing finding.

How on Earth can you call that "an amazing finding" when literally everything is either evidence of manmade global warming or at least partially caused by manmade global warming? An amazing finding would be such a study concluding that a particular event was neither caused by nor evidence for manmade global warming.

You do not make any sense.

Article title: Helped cause.
Thread title: Is the primary cause.

It's been known for a long time that the drought put a ton of farmers out of work and the government refused to aid them, instead treated them like common homeless criminals. They became angry, and the revolt was able to start up.

Turkey also damming up several rivers, greatly reducing downstream water flow through Syria & Iraq also causing damage for the same farmers.

California is now in it's 4th year of human-caused drought...watch out...war is coming!

...OK...now imagine that the U.S. suffered a drought that increased the price of a pound of food to $20/pound and that people were starving like in some sort of an Australian Mad Max-like scenario. An environmental disaster like that really could lead to societal breakdown and civil unrest because people gotta eat.

Have you ever heard of a forgotten philosopher named Thomas Malthus?

The hypothesis that a severe drought could have contributed to the conditions necessary for a group of crazed fanatics to come into power makes perfect sense to me, but I understand basic concepts of Malthusian biology.

Oh noes..... another calamity brought about by MMGW!

Wouldn't it be shocking if they actually did a headling which screamed "unprecedented bumper corn crop due to global warming"? Even if you can agree with the global warming meme, surely you can see that bias that screams out in the coverage or do you really believe that forced global warming is the single phenenom that has zero positive side effects?

Scientists believe climate change is turning a treasure-trove of exceptionally well-preserved Chilean mummies into "black ooze" at an alarming rate.
:
After remaining pristine for millennia, these mummies have mysteriously started to rapidly deteriorate over the past decade.

"In the last ten years, the process has accelerated," said Marcela Sepulveda, professor of archaeology in the anthropology department and Archeometric Analysis and Research Laboratories at the University of Tarapacá who specializes in materials characterization, during a recent visit to Cambridge. "It is very important to get more information about what's causing this and to get the university and national government to do what's necessary to preserve the Chinchorro mummies for the future."

Are you creating a thread like McOwned did with gas prices?

The Humidity levels seem to be the likely cause of the mummies degrading. The Humidity levels have been increasing. At no point did the article say that it was man made, but it is an empirical fact that the climate is changing.

Is there a scientific answer to protect these important historic objects from the devastating effects of climate change?

That question does not take a stance on climate change being man made. It does assume that the climate is changing, because the climate is changing. In this case, the region where the mummies are is seeing an increase in humidity.

And now they are saying the California drought is linked to global warming too!
http://arstechnica.com/science/2015/03/californias-hot-dry-winters-tied-to-climate-change/

But don't worry bshole, I'm sure you don't spend money on any agriculture out of California. Or if you do, excessively warm and dry conditions in CA will be positive for you in some way, some how. Cause how can global warming be mostly bad?

http://www.researchgate.net/publica...101_B.C._recorded_in_giant_sequoia_tree_rings

Drought frequency in central California since 101 B.C. recorded in giant sequoia tree rings

ABSTRACT Well replicated tree-ring width index chronologies have been developed for giant sequoia at three sites in the Sierra Nevada, California. Extreme low-growth events in these chronologies correspond with regional drought events in the twentieth century in the San Joaquin drainage, in which the giant sequoia sites are located. This relationship is based upon comparison of tree-ring indices with August Palmer Drought Severity Indices for California Climate Division 5. Ring-width indices in the lowest decile from each site were compared. The frequency of low-growth events which occurred at all three sites in the same year is reconstructed from 101 B.C. to A.D. 1988. The inferred frequency of severe drought events changes through time, sometimes suddenly. The period from roughly 1850 to 1950 had one of the lowest frequencies of drought of any one hundred year period in the 2089 year record. The twentieth century so far has had a below-average frequency of extreme droughts.
But, but global warming!
