Seriously. A couple of veteran speech writers could used Clint to deliver some truly killer lines only he could have gotten away with.

Huge opportunity missed for them with that.
Yep, an 8 minute rant by Clint properly written would have been played over and again, but there was really no substance to his 11 minutes at all.

Eastwood said he "never thought it was a good idea for attorneys to be president," apparently unaware that Romney holds a law degree.
The truth comes out.

Makes sense to me, campaigning against an imaginary president has been a core Republican strategy.

Another old rich white male conservative is just what the doctor ordered to really energise those not totally in love with the Romney/Ryan ticket.

Loved the speech. Love Clint. Got me really rev'd up about this election, think I'm gonna put a Mitt bumper sticker on my car.

Lets take this country back!

Thought he did fine. A little rough at the start but he got rolling just fine. Eastwood is more of a man than any of you pukes dogging him in this thread.

I just watched the speech on YouTube. He's an 82-year old man, and his age is showing, which makes me a little sad. The speech was all right-wing talking points - high on blame and low (make that completely lacking) on details.

Let's be honest: No one is going to change their vote - one way or the other - based on Clint's speech. But he did an OK job. And the right sorely needs something - anything - to feel good about.

Keep on truckin', Clint. I'll be sad when you're gone.

The truth comes out.

In addition...
Despite Eastwood's Republican affiliation, many of his views differ with the party. Though he has described himself as a fiscal conservative, he backs gay marriage, favors gun control and abortion rights and supports environmental causes.

Hmmmmm

Of course no one is going to change their vote based on what he said. However, conventions are tightly scripted events. Remember, this is the only time each campaign basically controls the spotlight for a couple of days and they want to make it count. They were hoping for some jabs only Eastwood could make. Instead it really blew the whole night off message. He actually led off during the prime time hour bumping Romney's bio video off the networks. Most people were still asking each other "wtf just happened?" during Marco Rubio's speech so his wind got knocked out. Finally, for most people who aren't political junkies, but did see the prime time hour, they are going to be talking about Eastwood tomorrow, not Romney. Years from now, people are going to remember Eastwood and not Romney.

I hope any push back from the WH against Clint stops here. One, he's an old man and really going after him would be inappropriate. Two, he's still very well liked by a lot of people so it would be politically stupid.

New DNC ad:

"Mitt's ideas and Clint have a lot in common - old and tired."

To me, Clint Eastwood has always been regarded as a true and decent republican. Unlike other nut-jobs, he was logical and his argument made sense. I especially loved films he directed as those masterfully show the worldview of his and that of a great republican.

Then, this. It was painful to watch because I knew he could've done something so much better. He could have given a speech that is concise and logical. He could've shown the one true side of republicans. He could've let the other nut-jobs know how the game should be played. Yet, he chose to pull out this miserable one-man comedy.
This is sad.

Great impersonation of a borsch belt comedian. Definately the oddest political convention moment ever-the only thing I can compare it to is Ted Danson's blackface monologue at some roast way back when.

If I didn't know Eastwood was a lifelong GOP I'd swear this was one of the best political dirty tricks pulled ever. Totally harmless but (once again) all the attention is diverted from Romney at what was to be his shining moment. I guarantee 90% of the watercooler conversations today will be about Eastwood and not about Romney.

I also predict that some of Romney's staffers had their political careers end last night. Willard, after all, loves to fire people-and whoever enabled this screwup is certainly going to get booted.

Axelrod was on Morning Joe this morning and was very gentle on Clint.

I still like Clint and don't think his brand has been damaged (I was aware of his political views before and still like the movies he directs).

Really reflects badly, yet again, on Romney's judgement and his campaign apparatus (Microsoft mediocrity by corporate committee, rather than having singular vision such as Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos).

National audience on broadcast tv at 10 PM and that's how they open? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kKf0ak5hWSQ)

Supposedly that 10 minute movie on Mitt was really great and it didn't open the 10 PM segment, with Mitt himself coming on stage right at end of it. Plus if he was really trying to rotate to the center, he came across as too strident (Nikki Halley tried to make some biting jabs at Obama, but her demeanor still came across as moderate and rational). Mitt basically just came across as angry to me.

And when I saw Obama's tweet above, I thought it was a jab at Romney, not Clint, despite clint delivering empty chair / empty suit attack.

Nikki and Rubio connected better and made better speeches than Romney. If Romney wants to connect to the average American he should take cues from them.

"What, you want me to tell him to do what? I cannot tell him that. He cannot do that to himself! You are getting as bad as Biden." That line was pretty funny, even the Obamites have to admit that.

You guys really need to walk away from the Journolista pablum you have been getting fed. Go catch an old time movie. Maybe if you did, you would see that Clint was channeling Jimmy Stewart in "Harvey."

While you go about spewing your hatred for older folks, you fail to realize that they vote. And they vote without fail, which is more than can be said for the X, Y and Z generations. Clint just reached out to them in a way that humorless Obama and his minions cannot.

Y'all are right that the country is talking about what The Man With No Name said and how he said it. He said what so many others have been saying. And he said it in a way that those of you channel surfing MSDNC would have to strain to hear. You had to pay attention, when you are so used to not doing so.

Anyway, it was some of the best political theater that I have ever seen, delivered by one of the great "tradesmen."

And you just don't get it! Yet. :awe:

MEDIA STRIKES BACK AFTER DIRTY HARRY DARES TO MOCK OBAMA

by JOHN NOLTE 30 Aug 2012

Newsflash: Obama can't take a joke. But we already knew that.

For four long years we've waited, hoped and prayed that some young comic would break free of the politically correct demands of The State and mock Obama the way all presidents and all people in power should be mocked. But for four long years (with a few exceptions) all we've seen instead are cowardly toadies of The State: Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Chris Rock, the cast of "Saturday Night Live"…

Since Obama won the presidency, comedy has pretty much gone straight to hell as our Entertainment Overlords morphed into pathetic lapdogs to The State; begging for scraps of attention and affection from Obama, and in the process becoming stale, lazy, dull, predictable, painfully unfunny, and like a needy poodle -- more than a little annoying.

Who would've ever thought that one of the men who would display enough backbone and "edge" to finally take it to Obama with wicked mockery on about 30 million live television screens would be 82 year-old Clint Eastwood?

Once we learned Eastwood was the night's mystery guest, no one knew what to expect. And anyone who took a guess most certainly didn’t guess that the Oscar-winning American icon would use his opportunity to relentlessly and hilariously mock Barack Obama in front of the entire free world.

It was glorious! And everyone I've talked to who was in the hall absolutely loved it.

Eastwood hit Obama in every sweet spot we've been waiting for him to get hit on: The incompetence; the lies; the empty, pretentious rhetoric; the inexperience; and that roaring blowhard of a moron Obama chose to be a heartbeat away.

Oh, and the empty chair. Other than an empty suit, there is no sharper metaphor.

Eastwood also made one of the very best points of the night: WE own this country, and when someone doesn't do the job "we have to let them go."

The media, naturally, is furious. They don’t like to see Their Precious One mocked and they also understand the power of mockery -- which is why they keep Stewart and Colbert on such a tight leash. This is why the media has already written 25 stories (5 from Politico) mocking Eastwood.

Had Eastwood said the things the media likes to hear with the same nervousness and hesitation, they would've called him wizened and seasoned. But because he mocked Their Precious One, suddenly he's some kind of embarrassment.

And now Politico, Ben Smith and CNN are all talking about how they intend to use Eastwood as way to overwhelm Mitt Romney's speech in the coming days.

Like they wouldn't have found another reason.

All I can say in response is: Go to hell you Obama-shilling crybabies. Eastwood showed more grit and honestly in those few minutes than you water carriers have during your entire propaganda-for-the-collective careers.

What Eastwood did tonight was funnier, fresher, edgier, and braver than anything those comedy cowards Chris Rock, Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert have done in 15 years.

82 years-old, and Dirty Harry is still pissing all the right people off.

My hero.
