We already knew the president wasn't elected on a perfectly democratic system. The EC was devised to avoid single counties to override 19 combined states as would have been the case this year. If you add Cook county in Illinois then you have 2 counties having more say than 25 states combined. A system where two metropolis and less diverse areas could override 25 entire states is a horrible way to pick presidents. We've changed the way we do things many times, from landowners voting to universal white male suffrage, to the end of slavery, to direct election of Senators, to Women's suffrage & more universal suffrage through the voting rights acts.
I think we've held more closely to the principles of Democracy in every instance. It's been a work in progress & this is no different.
Electoral college majorities that are not established by a popular vote majority are corrosive to the legitimacy of our govt, to the way we see govt. They fly in the face of our principles.
