Nothing against Clinton, but he was just a representative for Obama, sent to be the face of the U.S. He didn't do any real negotiating or make any decisions. He just told NK what we would give them and they said ok.

From the beginning, it was obvious that NK grabbed these people to use as leverage to get some kind of concessions. There was never any doubt that they would be released.

Does B. Clinton have a position in the administration?

Nope, tht's why it was a brillaint move.

Get what we want, do it quickly and without a photo op of an administration official sitting with Il. The real bonus is watching the Republicans get all worked up over this. ROFL. Ahahaha.

Maybe it is. Kim Jong DOES have a smile on his face in the AP photo...

Let people think we've lost power. All it takes is a single second to change that view point.

That's how the North Korean people are going to see it. We lose a little more power abroad.

Quick! Look out the window! What changed when you lost some power? Oh yeah, nothing.

Bush Sr would have played golf. The reporters would have been waterboarded while W drank a beer with Great Leader and watched the festivities.

I wonder at what cost

Our respect as a nation.

How does that work exactly?

Hmm, 2 Americans break another country's laws. We go there and say "Sorry can we have our people back. We don't think they should be held accountable for their actions."

Warning: this is your brain on Rush Limbaugh.

Somehow, with his past history, I doubt the State Department is gonna let Big Bill ride home with those two girls unchaperoned...

(even though, IMO, he's entitled to whatever he can get since he got them out of the NK prison...)

I'm not saying we should have left them over there forever, but I really have no sympathy for anyone that tries to break into NK, gets caught, and then has to abide by that country's rules.

I mean, shit, who the hell would want to go to NK in the first place? That's like saying "Hey, I want AIDS!"

Journalists, that's who. It's forbidden fruit (which makes it all the more prestigious for a journalist), and thus they want it. Nothing makes your career like "the big scoop" does.

The article doesn't go into enough detail to be able to come to that conclusion. Note the language from NK:

"Clinton expressed words of sincere apology to Kim Jong Il for the hostile acts committed by the two American journalists against the DPRK after illegally intruding into it," the news agency reported. "Clinton courteously conveyed to Kim Jong Il an earnest request of the U.S. government to leniently pardon them and send them back home from a humanitarian point of view.

"The meetings had candid and in-depth discussions on the pending issues between the DPRK and the U.S. in a sincere atmosphere and reached a consensus of views on seeking a negotiated settlement of them."

The report said Clinton then conveyed a message from U.S. President Obama "expressing profound thanks for this and reflecting views on ways of improving the relations between the two countries."

It added, "The measure taken to release the American journalists is a manifestation of the DPRK's humanitarian and peace-loving policy.

"The DPRK visit of Clinton and his party will contribute to deepening the understanding between the DPRK and the U.S. and building the bilateral confidence."

We don't know at this point what NK got in exchange for the two, but whatever it was they're clearly happy about it.

a few basketballs signed by Michael Jordan and some shitty bootlegged Baliwood-style film directed by Jon Woo that follows a strong moral socialism subtext.
