Just to set the record straight for those who insist on using "Clinton did it" as their excuse for anything and everything...

Clinton says he didn't use warrantless wiretaps

Article Last Updated: 1/13/2006 01:30 AM
Bloomberg News
Salt Lake Tribune

Former President Clinton said Thursday that he never ordered wiretaps of American citizens without obtaining a court order, as President Bush has acknowledged he has done.

Clinton, in an interview broadcast Thursday on the ABC News program ''Nightline,'' said his administration either received court approval before authorizing a wiretap or went to court within three days after to get permission, as required by law.

''We either went there and asked for the approval or, if there was an emergency and we had to do it beforehand, then we filed within three days afterward and gave them a chance to second guess it,'' Clinton told ABC.

Bush said in December that he authorized wiretaps without obtaining court permission and defended the practice as a ''vital tool'' in tracking terrorist suspects and accomplices.

''I don't have enough facts to know why there would be some reluctance to go there,'' Clinton told ABC. ''I felt that the court and the setup was more than enough to do what we needed to do.''

Asked if the president should have the authority to order wiretaps without warrants, Clinton said, ''I think that's a decision the Supreme Court would have to resolve.''

Let the Supreme Court decide? With Alito likely to be confirmed?

Goodbye Bill of Rights, Bill.

Well of course he didn't. There is a huge stink about it now, with the war on terrorism still going strong. All of a sudden, it's "common knowledge" that Clinton did the same thing. Yet mysteriously, actions which cause a huge uproar when done by a President in "wartime" passed unremarked during peacetime when done by a President who's party had far less control over the various branches of government. It just doesn't make sense.

Oh great, Slick commenting on Bush Administration policy again

Let's ask Slick about Echelon and Carnivore, shall we?

And perhaps we ought to ask the Times to do a thorough review.

can you point out where he commented on the current policy? All he did was state what he did and said that it would ultimately have to be decided by the Supreme Court..or am I missing something?

Clinton was an establishment tool like the rest of them, and his fiscal policy is responsible for the crash of 2000, but at least he never violated the constitution. And no, lying about sex is not in the constitution.

Man, why you haven't been banned for posting the same inane drivel over and over again in every thread is beyond comprehension.

I'm pretty sure his intention was to establish the fact that Clinton lied through his entire eight years. That just happens to be the most colorful quote with which to emphasize that fact. And since Clinton is a known liar, (and not just about the BJ) his denials of impropriety have to be taken with a grain of salt.

Comparing both as "liars" is reasonable.

However, Bush was outed and then fessed up. We need to see if Clinton gets outed.

My suspicion is No.

He was not as paranoid as Bush is with regards to security and his track record has shown that he was more interested in domestic "affairs".

Point taken. However, if Clinton lied about the above statements, it more than likely will come back to bite him (or Hillary). I agree with other posters that Clinton, working with a GOP congress, was much less likely to get warrantless taps to fly unless he hid them well, which I doubt in DC. Nothing stays hidden in DC too long.

I don't want to go too far off topic but since the door has been opened -- what is this nonsense about President Clinton being a "known liar"???

Is everyone who ever lied a "known liar" too? If so, I would suggest that every person on Earth is a known liar. Only some tell lies that do far more harm than others. If you people who insist on labeling Clinton a known liar have any sense of fair play at all -- and I doubt you do -- then how can you possibly not label Bush the same? And why, after the myriad lies Bush has told and continues to tell, haven't you done so yet?

Unfortunately, ABC doesn't have those particular clips for view. They do, conveniently, have his 2 cents on AIDS issues and the Iran situation, but his comments on this whole "spying" drama are not available, nor is a transcript of his comments (unless you are a subscriber.)

So you'll either have to pay and read the transcript, or take the words of someone who actually watched Nightline

Just what the hell does Harry Belafonte have to do with Bill Clinton?

And what is the origin of this vast well of hatred you have for Clinton? And why don't you ever show any similar emotion toward Bush, whose lies have cost tens of thousands of lives, hundreds of billions of dollars, and ruined the reputation of the United States around the world?

Vast well of hatred? LOL!

I'm wondering why you feel the need to jump in and defend him like your first born?

At least my disdain is spread pretty evenly among all players in what I view as a inherently corrupt system. Clinton was by no means as damaging to the republic as Bush is but that doesn't mean he wasn't a self-interested scumbag who failed the American people.

I have plenty of vitriol for these criminals

"self-interested scumbag who failed the American people."

Sounds a lot more like Bush. In fact, I think you may have been describing Bush I and misunderstood you.
