clipless pedals

I don't have clipless pedals on my specialized hardrock mountain bike. Should I even go on this upstate, mountain trip with my friend to ride our mountain bikes on off road trails? I don't think I will attempt any advanced courses, and instead stick with the novice courses. Preferably trails at the bottom of the mountain since I don't have special mountain biking shoes.

Heh, everyone rides platform pedals on really hairy downhill stuff anyway. Makes it easier to fall off and not hurt yorself.

get some shimano SPD pedals for your MTB

I'm currently still riding with "clipless pedals" for XC, some DH, etc. You should be fine. If you get more into riding, then yeah go for it. I heard its like night and day. I'm going to pick up some shoes and pedals soon.

I won't clip in for DH or steep climbs though, still not ready for that.

Are those pedals where you can wear regular sneakers and not have to wear MTB shoes where cleats fit into the pedals?

Um let me be clear about something. My pedals are the ones where you can wear regular sneakers which won't hold on to your shoes or anything as in clipless pedals where you need cleats to stick in.

i dont think its a good idea to wear clipless for DH bikes posted above... :Q unless you love your bike so much that you want to die with it. Actually it always magically clips out most of the time when you crash.

just stick with the platforms for now until you get familiar with your bike and the trail, otherwise you're not going to enjoy the ride because you're always worrying about clipping out on time... i ride clipless on my roadbike so i put them on my MTB as well... i just do XC riding with my humble hardrock...

don't ride on trails with them until you have practiced clipping in and out, you WILL fall

i still have my old shimano 535's, you might be inteerseted in something like the 636's, they have a platform around them and the clip in part in the middle, dunno fi they still make these. I just ride for fun now, used to be raelly into it

When you say platforms, you mean the stock pedals of the hardrock which don't require specials shoes, right? When you say clipless pedals, you mean the pedals which require special MTB shoes with cleats that clip into the pedals? When you say clips pedals, you mean pedals with a clip around your feet?

So basically, you are saying that to go ahead on this MTB trail with the stock, platform hardrock pedals and my regular outdoor sneakers?

get clip pedals like teh SPDs if you do a lot of XC rideing and some moderate downhill, if you do hoard core downhill your gonna want some platforms with studs

I have both Shimano SPD- m525s Clipless and Sun Ringle Zuzu platform

yeah why not? i've done it before i went clipless... no problems. you'll probably have more fun since you're not consntantly thinking about clipping out.

My friend has the same exact silver hardrock, all stock including reflectors and kickstand :Q and he's fine with riding it out on the trails.

Once you've become familiar with your bike on trails then maybe you can go clipless if you're still interested... I have 520s on my bike... i dont ride in mud so i dont have to worry about it packing in.

Those are fine, don't worry about it. Just be careful your foot doesn't come off... your shin won't like those sharp edges.

I still have the same pedals sitting around... i'll put them on a beater bike i'm putting together.

they are just your run of the mill platforms, you will be fine with them, a friend of mine rides on his cannondale f400 with the stock pedels just fine, clipless only really help with uphills

if you do alot of DH you will want better pedals, the zuzus i have are a great deal cause they are cheap and strong, they are getting old im thinking of getting some that are CNC machined out of magnesium

I never used clipless on the downhills I did. Like someone mentioned above, I would stick with what you have now until you get used to the clipless peddles.

The only reason for Clipless pedals are for pedal efficiency. It's so you can pedal on the down and the upstroke. Although thet're great for XC, Clipless and DH dont go together.

IMHO toe clips should burn in hell... i'd rather have nothing at all.. but clipless pedals are by far the only way to go. I've had my Shimano 535s for years now and no problems

just bought these and these today. Tried 'em out and I like 'em so far (shoes'll definitely have to break in). Dunno if there's a "night and day" difference between these and the pedal-foot-basket-things I was using before but there sure was a difference between not using anything and using the baskets. The nice thing is you can still use these with regular shoes, and I won't kill myself on technical singletrack when I can't get my feet into the baskets and the stupid thing catches a root/rock on the ground when it's upside down (which has happened several times now and is what prompted me to buy the pedals and shoes).

Just to make things a little more clear, because I sense the question on many minds:

Clip-pedals=toe-clips attached to regular, platform pedals; the big apparatuses (apparatii?) with adjustable straps that fit around your regular shoes, hiking boots, whatever footwear you choose.

Platforms=regular pedals without toe-clips. (Like on a kid's bike from Target, or wherever.)

Clipless=special pedals that accept cleated bicycle shoes. (You can't ride these pedals comfortably in regular footwear.) While the cleats from different brands and models of pedal are not interchangeable, the shoes are standardized to accept different brands and models of cleat (Called SPD). (Correct me if I'm wrong, anybody. I've been riding platforms due to convenience and frugality, so I don't know the clipless market very well.)

Those pedals are fine... dont spend more money on clipless pedals until you start spending a lot more time on the bike.

Oh... you'll probably be the only one on the trails with reflectors.

My friend has the exact same bike, comlete with seatbag and kickstand.
