Clone CD Question

My dad got the CompUSA Imation 8x External SCSI CD-R, which was famed for being made by Plextor, and being compatible with CloneCD after the BIOS string ID change.

I had a Plextor 12/4/32 SCSI in my machine, coupled with a UltraPlex 32x. I recently upgraded to an UltraPlex Wide 40x, and gave the UltraPlex to my dad so he could use CloneCD with his Imation/Plextor CD-R.

The UltraPlex 32x worked fine in my system and worked flawlessly with CloneCD. However, in my dad's machine, he can't get CloneCD to work properly.
When he tries to copy a CD using CloneCD, the drive doesn't spin up, and the progress bar never moves. In all other system operations, the UltraPlex works fine.

He's using the newest version of CloneCD (downloaded a few days ago), updated his ASPI layer using the updater from Adaptec, and has flashed the CD-R BIOS so it is now recognized as a Plextor.

Any ideas as to why it's not working?

I should mention that I think this is hardware related somehow, and not necessarily software-related, unless it's somewhere in the CloneCD config.
However, I had my dad configure his exactly as I had mine configured, and still no-go.

Any idea what could be different, considering that the CD-ROM is the same one I was using?

Just a thought, has he upgraded CD-R Bios to version 1.07 (required by CloneCD)?

Hey Dan,

I have the exact same burning setup at home. One day, in a fit of firmware-update-fever, I flashed the firmware in both drives to the latest versions. After that, my UltraPlex wouldn't work with CloneCD anymore.

After some research I discovered that the UltraPlex 32, when using the latest firmware version (not sure what number it is), is not compatible with Clone CD. I re-flashed it to the version that I previously had and it worked just fine. If I find that link again, I'll let you know what version is CloneCD compatible.

The UltraPlex hasn't been flashed, and it worked in my system. I believe I double-checked it anyway, and it was the right version.

What is the right version ???? Obviously a newer Plextor 32X is going to come new with the latest bios version installed as of the date of manufacture of the drive, so an older 32X might have an earlier version of firmware installed. Also is your and your Dad's computers identical in hardware and software installed ??? unless they are don't necessarly expect one unit to be compatable with both machines. i'm afraid you might have to do some digging on this one, is your Dad's hdds and the plextor 32x set to use DMA ?? This could very well cause your problem. Just my .02 c worth, and worth every penny.

Radarman> Please re-read my original post, as it answers some things you passed over.
I gave MY UltraPlex to my dad, so it's the exact same one. Not a different version of the same drive... It's my drive that he's using.
Otherwise, the only difference is the CD-R, which many have said they have gotten to work with CloneCD after using the name change utility. His CD-R is now recognized as a Plextor, but the progress bar in CloneCD just sits there and never moves.
And since the drives are SCSI, they don't have to be set to use DMA.
Hardware and software wise, our machines are not identical. But both of the drives he has are compatible with CloneCD.
