As the title says; I used Acronis True Image to copy the data from my old 40GB drive to an 80GB. It all seemed to copy ok, but when I booted up on the new drive, windows xp says that there were major hardware changes and I have three days to activate. Is this normal?

Thanks

I can't speak for Acronis, but I just did this with Ghost from a 20GB to a 100GB
on a Toshiba Laptop .... XP Home did not complain about reactivating one bit.
But on this unit, it is an OEM XP which is preactivated if you use the Toshiba CD
to reinstall, like with a Dell or HP or Compaq .. If you have retail XP you may have
to reactivate .. But it should be no issue to do it online.

It happens, if all you changed was the hard drive you should have no issue re-activating.

It's happened to me too on several occasions. I just re-activate.

The last time I was prompted to re-activate XP I had swapped the motherboard, video card, CPU and RAM plus added a 250gb SATA HD when upgrading my daughters pc ... it took about 5 minutes on the phone with MS.

probably the initial hash that was used to activate used the hard drive as part of it and since you changed it it need to be re-activated. Should reactivate fine. I have see this and reactivated fine with no issues

I change my HDDs every week on three computers using Acronis TI-11's CLONE function. It has never required a reactivation. The only thing that happens is "New Hardware Found" and a reboot is required. BTW - two of the systems are Vista and one is XP Pro. Been doing this for years way before Acronis ever existed. I previously used DriveCopy. Also, I never clone from within Windows. Always use the bootable CDR, and manual mode.
