Cloning a working WinXP partiton onto a logical RAID-1 drive?

Had a working RAID-1 array. One drive failed and the RAID array went into a degraded state. Got two new drives, fitted and tested.

Now I can recreate the RAID array using the BIOS utility or using the Adaptec Storage Manager Browser edition software, thats no worries. What I can't seem to do is clone the old drive onto one of the new ones and build the array after its cloned - the BIOS util will only allow formatting the drives before creating an array and the windows util will only allow an array to be made on the current OS partition.

How can I go about copying the existing working HD onto a RAID array? Ghost wont work with RAID devices so what are my options?

Nevermind, it can be done, just having a blonde moment.

Normally, you'd just pull the bad drive out and replace it with a new drive and let the array rebuild itself.

Then, if you also wanted to replace the GOOD drive (of the old set), you'd pull IT and let the array rebuilt. Now you'd have an array with two new drives.

Is this how you did it?

Nope. Got new problems now.

You build a new RAID-1 array in the card's BIOS and select a source drive for the data. Takes a few hours.

Had a problem then the system wouldn't boot. I unplugged the drive from the controller and plugged it into the motherboards SATA port. It booted fine. I unplugged the drive from the motherboard, plugged it back into the adaptec card and it wouldn't boot. Typical symptom of a missing RAID card driver in windows. However if I unplug the second drive from the RAID card, WinXP boots from the RAID card.

So I went into the RAID card's BIOS and deleted the second drive from the mirrror set and left the mirror in a degraded state. Windows booted. I plugged in the second drive and using the windows utility, added it as a hot spare. The array regenerated within windows and everything said it was OK. I reboot and it wont boot, same symptom as before.

The symptom is windows starts to boot (if you boot safe mode, about 20 drivers load and it gets to \windows\system32\Mup.sys and dies there. In normal mode it just goes black as it normally does prior to showing the black Windows XP screen with the scrolling bar.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Am I right in guessing it may be somethign to do with the RAID card's boot driver in HKLM\SYSTEM\Services ?

What do I look for though?
