We used to call in close air support and napalm strikes. Often less than 100 meters from where we were at.

Hearing the fast-burners coming in when you're surrounded by Indians...is a sweet sound.

Then again, I think the sweetest sound was the "thump, thump, thump" of a Huey coming into Indian country to extricate us...when the whole dammed NVA was trying to find us.

 to the fine folks who do such jobs...even if the pukes do sleep in air-conditioned comfort most of the time...

I recently saw a documentary on the military about a green beret team during the first iraq war that became engaged and had to call in the fly boys or get overrun. They had been dropped in during the night by copter and dug themselves into a drainage ditch to have oversite of the main highway in the area. They were only supposed to be on a recon assignment but a kid playing in the area spotted them and eventually a bunch of regular troops started coming at them.

So they called out for mayday support and got picked up by a flight already in the air on another mission that diverted; only problem was they just had unguided cluster bombs. It was pretty interested to watch as they showed the interviews done separately of the guys flying and on the ground. The ground talker was doing his best to give position guidance by visible landmark and after the aircrew verified a couple times are you sure of this location they started their runs. One of the first ones took out the trucks that stopped along the highway, but the rest were dropped on gut than visible ID and the air guys just talked about how they'd hold their breath after releasing till they heard comm talk again.

Danger close.

"I LOVE the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like VICTORY!"

Although in reality, in addition to the "burning petroleum smell, there was usually that "roast pork" smell of burning human flesh...

I remember a cadence we used to sing. Something like: :music: "napalm sticks to kids"

Napalm Sticks to Kids
By Collectively written by the GIs of the First Air Cavalry in Vietnam

We shoot the sick, the young, the lame,
We do our best to kill and maim,
Because the kills all count the same,
Napalm sticks to kids.

Ox cart rolling down the road,
Peasants with a heavy load,
They're all V.C. when the bomb explode,
Napalm sticks to kids.

A baby sucking on his mother's tit,
Children cowering in a pit,
Dow Chemical doesn't give a shit,
Napalm sticks to kids.

Blues out on a road recon,
See some children with their mom,
What the hell, let's drop the bomb,
Napalm sticks to kids.

Flying low across the trees,
Pilots doing what they please,
Dropping frags on refugees,
Napalm sticks to kids.

They're in good shape for the shape they're in,
But, God I wonder how they can win,
With Napalm running down their skin,
Napalm sticks to kids.

CIA with guns for hire,
Montagnards around a fire,
Napalm makes the fire higher,
Naplm sticks to kids.

Drop some napalm on the barn,
It won't do too much harm,
Just burn off a leg or arm,
Napalm sticks to kids.

We aim to please. The A/C is needed to account for the pucker factor of a telephone pole coming at you.
