HI
I have a Dell Studio XPS laptop. About 4 1/2 years ago I bought it from Dell as a refurbished unit. There were some minor problems that were fixed by Dell under the warranty.
The past few months when I close the lid (without powering down or putting it in the sleep mode) when the lid is about half way closed the screen will flicker (go black) for a second and then come back on as I continue to close the lid. It does not do this all the time. Then, there are days when closing the lid the screen will flicker 2 to 3 times or more as I continue to close the lid. Then after that,,, for a day or more everything is ok.
Any suggestions as to what the problem could be???
Thanks

Part ll
Just being curious. First, thanks for the info.
When closing the lid on a laptop,,, is there some type up switch that is used to send a signal to shut down or put the laptop into a sleep mode? I realize each brand of laptop might have a different way of doing things.

If I had to guess I would say it is a loose connection in either the top of the laptop or in the bottom somewhere.

It probably needs disassembled and checked. Sooner or later, if it is the problem, you will most likely loose your video to the screen all together.

You could plug an external monitor in and try to reenact the problem and see if the external monitor does the same thing. If it does then there is something else wrong.

But, my guess is a loose connection.

Agreed, but it could be crimped wire(s) in the jacketed wire bundle for the video display. One of the connections at either end may not be seated, but there are anywhere between 8-15 wires in that jacket, one that's crimped could cause that symptom as well.

I've had this problem be both the connection, and the screen. cheapest fix would be to replace the cable first.
