Clothes Dryer exhaust: CO poison?

My landlord is cutting corners and exhausting the clothes dryer into the laundry room air. Is there CO in the exhaust? Or just wet, steamy air?

Why would there be carbon monoxide? Dryers dont burn anything, they pass air through really hot coils and thats what gets vented. Seems like it would be a bad idea for a laundry room since it could promote fungal growth

Isn't there somewhere to hook up the exhaust? Too much moist hot air like that and you'll have mold problems.

Carbon monoxide will be produced by incomplete combustion. If the flames are predominately blue, you're getting CO2 not CO. When you have yellow tips, there is insufficient primary combustion air (blocked venturi/eductor/mixer etc. OR insufficient oxygen in the laundry room! -DANGER).

A normally functioning gas drier (LPG or NG) will just add put out CO2, heat (duh!) and water vapor. It also needs make up air so if the room is too "tight" you run the risk of lowered O2 levels and THAT will produce CO; which can be lethal.

Thx, this is the answer I wanted. The dryers are new, so they are prolly working OK. But it still seems dangerous.

I would not be comfortable with that. Get the city involved if the landlord won't do anything. That can't be up to code.

Yes definitely check your local codes. If there is a violation the owner will need to abate it.

Since you don't own the place, fire the dryer up full time and load it with wet towels and just do it over and over and over. People go ape ****** over mold now. Dude will be out so much $$$ fixing mold problems.

Hmm... cutting corners - how would this save him any money?

Does he think that the air it sucks in to heat up, will already be warm, and will thus save him money?

At the very least, it would make the room incredibly hot, and the room would smell like Snuggles & Bounce.

i'd get a carbon monoxide detector for my apt straight away... heck, you should be having one in your home anyway. Especially now!

And all the lint and such that's not caught by the lint trap will be flying all over the place. I'd contact some sort of building inspector of your local area and ask about any codes regarding venting a dryer indoors. They do make devices that vent it through water so the water catches the lint but I heard they aren't always reliable.

And here's a good read for ya:

Saves money by not running a vent outside. If there's no place in the siding of the house, he's going to have to get a contractor in there and put one in, which may run him a couple hundred dollars.

It's a gas dryer, so there are 2 vents, one out the top (for combustion gasses) and out the back (for the heated air, that is not the combusted gas, and has lots of water vapor in it)

If it's the first, demand they fix it, or call the local fire inspector/find a new house to rent, that is a SERIOUS issue.

If it's the second, don't worry too much, as it'll rot that house that you don't own out.

Just make sure there's enough O2 in the combustion chamber. Otherwise CO instead of CO2 will be emitted and you will die a painless death if the room is closed.
