Cloud storage sites make my internet unusable

I tried both Amazon and google's iCloud storage service. Both when uploading stuff make my internet unusable. So someone in the family will complain and therefore I never get a chance to get my stuff uploaded.

Is there any way whatsoever to control the bandwidth and leave some breathing room?

Many ways. If you do a google search for "limit upload bandwidth windows" you'll find oodles. Netbalancer comes up a lot; I've used it, it works.

What kind of files are you uploading and how much? Most of the documents in my Google Drive aren't larger than a few MBs - they upload in a minute or three.

My router has QoS which also works pretty well for this. Keeps Crashplan uploads from taking over everything and keeps MMOs and web surfing chugging along alright. It's nice because then I don't need to do any client configuration.

PDF's of older magazines like MAD, GamePro..etc is what they are. Around 10 or so gigs of them. I sometimes go through them on my tablet, that's why I wanted to put them up on the cloud.

Checked into Netbalancer but no MAC version it seems. Guess I should upgrade my router..shame cause it's a $250 gaming router but it's getting old I suppose.

Also, how do I know what port Amazon or Google is using?

Entonnoir is a free alternative for Macs - http://tools.chocoflop.com/entonnoir_en.html

I haven't used it, but a few people have told me it works OK. If it works for you, I wouldn't mind having access to a few of those old Gamepro issues for nostalgia's sake!

Most web traffic will use either port 80 or 443. Not sure if the other programs can or not, but this won't be able to distinguish between Google/Amazon traffic and other sites - it'll throttle your upload across the board. However, it's easy enough to turn it on when you're uploading and then turn it off once you're done.

If you setup a pfsense router/firewall you can setup traffic shaping or simply a limiter rule in the firewall.

Have not played with it too much myself but when I did, it did work fairly well. When I had ADSL I would traffic shape my torrents so the traffic does not kill my web surfing.

If you have a $250 router, that's not an Apple Airport, you can probably flash it with Tomato or something and get those QoS features.

I was curious about the router you are using, so I searched the forums in the hopes of finding the model number ("d-link extreme gamer n router dgl-4500"). I also found out you've had a couple of speed-related issues with this router since you've owned it, such as:

fast on modem, slow on router (similar complaints on Newegg)

With wireless on, my wired connection speed drops. (similar complaints on Newegg)

And now this.

Guess I should upgrade my router..

I wholeheartedly agree.

I have this same problem. Put a large file on Dropbox, and Inet doesn't work until the upload is complete. It completely saturates the maximum upload speed offered by my ISP (6mbps).

Uploading to YouTube does the same thing.

There are no throttling features in my AirPort Extreme 5th gen wireless router.

[edit]
When I first looked into this over a year ago, Dropbox for Windows didn't have any bandwidth-limiting features that I could find. I see it has those now. Yay!

Still doesn't solve the problem with YouTube uploads and other things.

I won't buy a router unless it supports third party firmware (DD-WRT, Tomato, OpenWRT, etc) since it is so configurable. For example, I use Tomato by Shibby on my router and I just set a bandwidth limit of 10kbps down and 1kbps up on my LAN IP as a test (example).

Before:

After:

And even though a lot of routers will do this with the factory firmware I still prefer third party firmware.

Sure I don't mind sharing at all....let me figure out how to share a link and I'll post up a couple. I'll make a list of what emags I have and upload whatever amount you want to read from that list, just let me know....up to my storage limit that is.
Actually is it against any rules to share old mags like this here? if not I may make a thread for it and post a bunch of links for everyone to enjoy.

I tried out Entonnoir...I think its working but not sure if I'm actually supposed to put in a port number or not. But I selected upload kb and I assume it's throttling all my uploads and seems to help a little bit so far from what I can tell. Still slow as all hell though.

I can barely configure my router as it is. lol. I think I probably should buy a new dual band one though.

yeah, that's my router. I noticed it's way cheaper now. $45 on amazon. I've never been that happy with it, had some intermittent issues here and there but mostly I never learned how to configure it like it was meant to for gaming and such. I tried messing with settings several times before but since I never really understood some of the settings like Beacon..etc and port forwarding and I asked before how I should configure it all but never really learned enough to bother. I can hook up a wire directly to my modem to bypass my router and my internet is way, way faster. Not sure if all routers are like this or not but at least I'm not the only one with the bandwidth issue when uploading stuff.

They are not. You have a dud. Do yourself a favor and replace it.

Sweet, thanks man

If you have links to any other Gamepro issues, i'd love to get them. I have a 26 hour flight from Australia to New York coming up this weekend, so this would be great reading material
