The best summary I can give for the movie is this: At one point in the movie a soldier says "It is what it is" and I think JJ Abrams intentionally put it in there in a subtle way for the fans to find, as that's what pretty much defines this movie. You will have questions, they will not be answered. They will never be answered. The entire movie is just a way to set up speculation and internet buzz just like LOST is. No surprise there.

As far as the plot... well... anyone that saw the original preview before Transformers should take heed that it's about a ~3 minute trailer, with 2:15 BSing and building storyline that has nothing to do with the Monster while the rest is quite actionable. The same holds true to the movie. In the end it seemed as if the monster was a subplot to the movie. It's only a shade shy of being a MacGuffin. In the end it's a stupid love story that would be onshelves at the video store by May if there weren't such a hype involved... but with a Monster.

All that being said, I don't regret the time I spent watching it. It was entertaining. I don't regret the money I spent to see it. It delivered all of what it promised... which was pretty much nothing but cool graphics and a "simple" scenario. If you DO plan on seeing it, I URGE you to do it this weekend because by next weekend everyone will have spoiled it all for you.

Bah, everyone left the theater grumbling about how it was an awesome movie with a dumb freakin ending, and I heard a few people compare it (based on that aspect alone) to I Am Legend.

#1 Should've seen Rob and his girlfriend getting kinky, she was cute
#2 Bit more gore, R rating
#3 SOME CLOSURE DAMNIT

how about the obvious questions?

how did they not run of batteries or tape after filming all night???

especially after using the flash as a flashlight in the subway???

technically they would only use batteries whenever they filmed, and the movie was only so long. so while the course of events was probably over 7 hours, the film was only 70 minutes long. the flashlight part we'll just chalk up to a super highly efficient movie continuity flashlight bulbs.

what you see at the end of the film is a satellite falling into the ocean which awakes the monster. At least that's what it looked like to me. I'm pretty sure during the viral marketing this was revealed.

Also at the end of the credits you can hear Rob say "it's alive".

Just saw it, I don't think it's best movie of 2008 but I thought it was well worth the $9 I spent on it. So many questions though that need to be answered.

My question is why the fvk did the movie just end in the middle? I hated the movie because of that. I actually tell my friends not to see it.

I enjoyed it.

Critically speaking, Hud = lol...that camcorder woulda gotten dropped & left behind countless times, so it kinda seemed unrealistic in that regard, but heh, that was the whole movie...

It was intense though...definitely edge of your seat kinda movie.

I'll certainly watch it again (likely in HD when that comes out), but i left feeling it was a bit empty...kinda missing something.

Does anyone know if a sequel is planned?
I'd expect so, but i guess they may decide pending on the financial outcome of this one...

i dont understand what you are talking about. the end of the movie is at the end, not the middle, that would be the middle of the movie, not the end.

JJ Abrams came up with this...and LOST... it's not going to end for another 3 sequels

just watched the movie. i liked it, my friend didn't. my gf got a bit nauseated but liked the story but wanted closure

i knew what to expect from jj abrams. no closure, no answer no nothing. so i thiought it was okay that they left it like that. maybe a sequel is warranted as from another point of view and continue on the story if they had to

i didn't notice the end at coney island where the monster landed, but if that was true, that wouldn't be believable (i know this is sci fi), the monster landed within the visible vicinity of Coney Island and took a few weeks to come attack NYC? (didn't the Rob guy said he did it with Beth, went to Coney Island, and then a few weeks passed by until the party and they never talked in between because he was going to leave for Japan?)

my pet peeve to the movie: fake Spring St. subway station

i stayed to listen to that audio tape at the end, but i couldnt hear what it was because a bunch of dumb kids were laughing loudly... it sounded like "it's still alive" a little bit but only because i spent the 10 minutes of the credits on my blackberry visiting imdb.com trying to see if there was something after the credits worth staying for and i kinda knew what to expect

i also told my gf how not to get dizzy, motion sickness or nauseated from the camcorder style of view. when they go crazy running, etc, it's not like you can make out anything anyway by focusing on a subject on the screen with your eyes, instead i usually (yes i even did this back in blair witch project) stare at something to the side. like the EXIT sign near the movie screen. and i can still see what's going on in the screen but my focus is on a stationery object, not the vomit-inducing screen.

All my friends and I thought the movie pretty much sucked. As well as the entire theater. Firstly, I'm sure that everyone just got really nauseated. I hate this shaky cam shit. Secondly, that ending was the worst. As someone in the theatre put it at the end, "I've grown so attached to these characters." Basically, I didn't give a shit really if everyone died.
Finally, how did the fucking camera survive the nuke?

They never indicate that Hammer Down is a nuke. They indicate that it's a total destruction of the city. Think of it this way, if it was a nuke regardless of surviving the blast, the EMP shoulda wiped the vid. I think Hammer Down was just a huge number of high yield explosives.

I thought it was a very fun movie. And it was done in just good enough of a way that while I wasn't jumpy or scared during it .... I started more and more thinking of how I'd feel in their situation and how incredibly terrifying it could be to be there.

I've read statements where they said if they did do a sequel it would be more of showing another tape that got found or possibly the military's filmography of it using live footage, but not a sequel where we necessarily see the aftermath.

For those of you that missed the splashdown in the extended Coney Island shot, don't feel too badly as I was the only one in my group of friends that observed it. Kind of hard to believe that nobody else did tho. I mean, seriously, why else would there be an extended beach/ocean shot if not to provide a clue as to the origins of the creature? Your first clue to pay attention should have been the fact that it was almost the only shot during the entirety of the film that wasn't bouncing/moving like crazy; almost as if to say, "Hey! Pay attention! Something is going to happen!"

I'm speculating that the object seen falling into the ocean (seen in the far right of the shot) is, in fact, the creature. Apparently it took several weeks to gestate before deciding to destroy/eat New York. Where there plenty of plot holes? Sure. Did I get sick of the bouncy cam? Of course. Was I entertained? Yep.

I looked for the splashing down in the ocean scene but I didn't see anything. I think the theatre might have had the side cropped a little too much. How close was it to the edge of the screen?

I have also read that the object was a satellite and the company that owns it woke the monster when trying to retrieve it.
