I'm getting the coolermaster hyper 212 here shortly and just had some quick questions that I hope can get answered. I realize that this particular cooler only comes with 1 fan but I wish to add another for push/pull for maximum performance.

1.)The stock fan is a PWM but doesnt come with a Y splitter yet I want to add another fan that I can control, what do I do here? Do I just plug the other fan into a 3 pin on the mobo?

2.)Im not sure how good the stock fan is, but since I need to get another one, what would you guys recommend in the price of 10 bucks(might be able to go a tad more) from here http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?cPath=8_130.

3.)Do you want high or low rpm fans for the hyper 212 or cpu coolers in general?

Thanks a ton, this will be my first build and im still a bit nervous so I want to get everything down that I can. What better place to get enlightened than from all of you.

thanks again

that's really going to depend on how well your case fans cool the interior of the case. for instance, i'm also using the CM 212+, but i ditched the noisy-as-hell stock fan in favor of 2 Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mm fans in a push/pull configuration. while they only move 33.5 CFM @ 800rpm apiece (and quite possibly move less air than the single stock fan did @ 2000rpm), they are virtually dead silent (8.7dBA each). and in conjunction with the CM 212+, they still manage to keep my AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE max temp at 44°C under 100% CPU load (i run DC projects 24/7). granted its running at the stock 3.4GHz, but still impressive to say the least...

but don't expect your CM 212+ to give you great cooling (regardless of the fans you use with it) if the interior of your case doesn't stay nice and cool. FWIW, i have a COOLER MASTER Gladiator 600 case, and my CM 212+ moves air upward and out the top exhaust case fan. my condo never exceeds 73°F and is often cooler than that.

If you want to run two fans in push/pull, it's best to use matching fans so they're working together.
though folks don't always elaborate on it, BoomerD makes a great point here - i would also recommend using matching fans for a push/pull configuration. sure, you could do it with 2 different fans, but cooling efficiency might suffer. for instance, you could have 2 different 120mm fans, but there's a good chance that they move different amounts of air at the same RPMs due to differences in blade angle/surface area/quantity/design.

My build will be in a haf 912 with 2 intakes and 2 exhausts, if I have the money I'll add another intake.

i have no experience with the HAF 912 myself, but i hear nothing but great things about how well the HAF series cases keep cool. i'm using THIS Cooler Master case myself, and while it isn't nearly as popular as the HAF series cases, it certainly gets the job done. i've got a 120mm intake fan in front, a 120mm exhaust fan at the back, and a 120mm exhaust fan on top. the side panel has 2 spots for 120-140mm fans, but i've left one unpopulated b/c my there isn't enough room for a 25mm thick case fan between the top of my CM 212+ and the side panel, and the other is unpopulated simply b/c i don't yet need the extra cooling...perhaps that'll change when i start OCing the CPU.

that being said, i can only imagine that your HAF 912 is as good a cooling case as my Cooler Master case if not better. so provided your home is 75°F or less, i would imagine that you could get away with some fairly low-rpm, moderate CFM 120mm fans for your CM 212+ and still be alright.

I'm about to do the same thing, but figured I'd try to move the CM stock fan to the pull side, and put this Gelid PWM fan on the push side.

According to the specs, the Cooler Master fan can move slightly more air, so I figured it could keep up with air pushing its way. We'll see how it goes, I may wind up with 2 Gelids... Anyone else tried this fan?

Also, on my P8P67 Pro, I planned to plug the PWM pull fan into CHA_FAN1, which is also 4 pin. I can't quite tell from the manual whether this connection operates using PWM though. Bad idea?

Let me know how much cooler it is with two fans versus one...

...I have the 212+ as well.

I had two fans on there before and it didn't make much difference at all. I think if the rear fan is close enough, you should focus on getting a better fan. I was looking at the Scythe GT 1400rpm fan but its about $20 shipped and the Yate Loons I chose are almost the same for less.

Just a quick update, as I finally got this setup. After some initial glitchiness (which seems to have been resolved by disabling C3/C6), I'm consistently getting 3 degrees cooler at max load. I'm folding now and getting temps of 58 61 59 55 across all cores. Very pleased with these temps, and the extra case bling doesn't hurt.
