Did any of you guys accidentally break the clips when installing your optical drive/floppy drive? I accidentally bent one of the clips too hard when I was installing a floppy drive and broke off one of the clips. Now the 5.25" shield is loose since only one side of the clip is there. What should I do? Should I try to glue the clip back or just tape the shield down so that it's not loose?

It hasn't happened to me but I can see how it could. Took me a little time to figure out how to remove the bay fillers w/o damage. The instructions are there, but the diagrams are so small, it's often hard to tell what they mean. Keep your magnifying glass handy.

I'd glue it back. Gel type superglue or Gorilla glue (polyester glue) should do ya. C-M had to cut a few corners to make such a nice case for such low bucks.

You think the glue will be strong enough to keep it from breaking when I bend it again?

What does this piece look like?

Is it a spring tab? If the cross sectional area is small, the repair by most adhesives will likely fail. I have a hot air plastic welder that seems to work the best in fixing stuff like this but it's still a challenge to do this. Gorilla glue (polyurethane) is good for large cross sectional areas, preferably roughened slightly. It will also expand when curing and this must be accounted for.

I suggest removing the whole front bezel to remove or work on the filler plates. It wasn't that hard to remove them with little stress from the back side of the bezel. IAC, yes, super glue done right won't come undone - neither should gorilla glue. The front bezel, however, can be a bear to remove the first time. I pulled it out a bit at the bottom and worked up each side with a table knife prying lightly as I went along. And be careful when putting the bezel back on - tape the push buttons for the switches so they are even with the bezel to keep them from jamming the switches - voice of experience here ...

Maybe I need a pic too, as I'm not sure whether the OP and I are thinking apples and apples, or apples and oranges. The bay fillers are one sheet of metal. If that's what we're talking about, and you actually managed to break one end off, then glue won't work without a backer plate. So give us an 8x10 glossy w/ circles and arrows... ;-) That way we'll be sure we know what is being discussed.

No, but I bent the front shield off... I suggest using a screw to secure the drive.

Oh, so you broke the plastic clip off that holds the filler plate on that side. Glue probably won't work well on that plastic clip unless you have a piece of similar plastic that you could use to back the clip for more surface area. I'm going to look at mine to see if a mini binder clip might work to hold that in place.

Cool, thanks.

I got some Krazy Glue at home. You think that might work?

I have used plastic fusion to adhere plastic trim on automotive door panels where the heat seal had broken. It worked well for that application. I purchased it a Home Depot but I am not sure whether they still carry it.

I'll give Krazy Glue a go first and if it doesn't work out, I'll explore other options like Plastic Fusion. Thanks for the suggestion.
