anyone know a good keyboard to use for Android? Stock Android keyboard is pathetic for a tablet. The webOS keyboard is actually pretty nice because if you use it like a regular keyboard, and do "Shift + ." you get a comma. While I'm used to going to the "alt" symbol page or holding down a "." to get a comma on my phone, it's less intuitive when you're on a larger screen tablet where you can use the keyboard like a real desktop keyboard.

Maybe some iPad imitation keyboards?

I like thumb keyboard, but it does not have a number row with alt characters like you're asking.

But it does have alt keys on each letter that you long press for, and you can shift + letter to get caps.

+1 for Thumb keyboard. I have used it since January-ish and love it.

I am a huge fan of Swiftkey X on my phone (the tablet version for tablets, of course). Thumb key is also great and I've actually been using it the past week or so.

My best friend told me of a few quirks which will hopefully be helpful for someone.

When the device goes to sleep, the touchscreen will sometimes not respond, but putting it back into sleep mode by pressing the outside button fixes it. He also told me the wireless will typically be disabled but needs to just be clicked back on in settings.

grr i got swiftkey for free on my phone, but the tablet version is another download... heh. we'll see.

the webos 3.0.4 borked my CM7 so until I get back in there and reinstall MoBoot, I'll just chill on webOS.

In any case, CM7 is kinda unusable in that the power drain is ridiculous, so I'd rather sit on webOS for now....

Another thumbs up for thumb keyboard. I'm actually a huge fan of swiftkey, but swiftkey x for tablets really isnt doing it for me. It feels like the keys are "sticking" when typing in swiftkey.

I'll keep swiftkey for my phone and thumb keyboard for the tablet. Also, you can't beat the number of customizations available for thumb keyboard.

How bad is it for you? What does it say in Battery Usage and Spare Parts=>Partial Wake Lock?

Battery life for me is noticeably worse than on WebOS but I'm still getting several hours worth.

am I the only one who finds this build to not be usable day to day? It's very choppy to navigate. Not to mention some of the launchers don't work right (go launcher in particular, sizing is wrong). Twitter isn't seemingly available nor is Dolphin HD (like it for lastpass plug in). Can't seem to get a PIN lock to work either.

Yes, I know, this is alpha. Just making points to some of reports that this was very ready to go. It certainly is a lot more than I was expecting. I'm hoping ICS can get ported to this relatively quickly.

There's another zip you flash to make the market show the apps like Dolphin HD.

http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?7809-How-to-Install-Google-Market-amp-Apps-on-CM7-Alpha-TouchPad

I have that installed, but a search for twitter or dolphin HD comes up with a bunch of stuff I don't want. For twitter, I just get a bunch of clients that aren't the official one. for dolphin, I get a ton of the plug ins and stuff, but not actually dolphin. tried dolphin HD, dolphin HD browser, dolphin, dolphin browser, dolphin. Yet, comes up first when I search on my evo3d or on the web

Are you sure you have that one. Its not the same fix as in the guides. Before I did it I couldn't find dolphine hd in a search. After it showed no problem and let me install it.

Did you maybe install the other store update to 3.2.0? That one messed me up!

Typing in CM7 now using dolphin hd browser. Just searched the store and twitter showsup

Friend of mine installed this today and it works well for an alpha but I won't be touching it until a more final build is released.

I just installed the new 3.04 update for WebOS and it make the tablet run much better.

As for the hate for WebOS in the few post on the first page, i've had no problems with it at all and it has grown on me.

And I use my tablet everyday its setup on my work Exchange server thru mobile iron so i'm not just some guy that uses it on the toilet

Not sure why so many people are already saying this is better than WebOS. It has more apps, but the majority of Android apps are junk in my experience, and Gingerbread + apps you can download generally aren't meant for tablets.

Yeah, WebOS has its issues, but its much more usable than CM7 currently. It just offers a better experience. Of course, I expected this since CM7 is in alpha. I think people are getting too exciting about it and hating on WebOS more than they should be. I'm not even that crazy about WebOS...

I didn't see anyone saying CM7 is already much better than WebOS. I see people pleasantly surprised at the progress of CM7 and how well the alpha runs on the Touchpad. Many of us like WebOS, myself included. 3.0.4 is a nice update from HP. But the ability to run Android/CM7 is sweet and having the option of multiboot is even better. It's like having one's cake and eating it too.

I like webOS more than Android. With the update to 3.0.4 it seems to run much better. The browser isn't the best but it does work much better now at least. Just gotta wait for the essential patches/tweaks and it should be pretty snappy! Love the swipe and flick the most about webOS and find myself trying to do it in Android and iOS. No more iOS as I ditch'd the iphone for a SGS2.

That said....I did a clean install of both webOS 3.0.4 and CM7

After the initial CM7 install along with a couple zip files and a few apps, the intial release is pretty impressive. Although it does take some tweaking to make it look pretty. Android on the TouchPad does look like it could be impressive once the build matures.

It's nice to have the option of dual booting with the TouchPad. The TouchPad is a one of a kind tablet. It may have failed in HP's eyes but it's currently the only tablet with the ability to dual boot multiple OS's and most likely will be the last!

If we get another update or two from HP and a more mature Android build from the community these babies are gonna fly. Let's just hope the hardware can keep up....As in build quality isn't the greatest.

Thoughts so far with CM7, great so far and still needs improvement ! When I'm done with CM7, I continue to still use the ever stable WebOS for my internet endeavours :awe:

Alpha 2.1 has been good so far. Haven't had any SOD yet, no funky wi-fi issues, and am losing a little less than 1% of battery per hour of sleep (with wi-fi always on). Not sure what it was doing before, but decent imo.

I know this is a CM7 thread, but since there's a lot of talk about the 3.0.4 update for WebOS, can someone tell me - does updating to 3.0.4 break any of the preware "patches"? ie: Do you have to go through and do all the preware stuff again or not?

Yes it does break a great number of them. Overclocking will also be gone until they update the kernels.

It breaks many of the preware "patches". But 3.0.4 is so much better. Honesty I don't need most of the preware patches with this version. Everything is smoother and faster. I did the regular over the air system update first on one of my tablet and then decided to webOS doctor all my tablets to get fresh install of WebOS and CM7.

I'm just waiting on swipe left and right web browser preware add-on update and I will be set. I find myself constantly swiping left and right on all my devices while browsing now to go back and forward on the web page. I wish Android/iOS had that. It's so convenient and makes for better browsing experience. Having to go up and press the back arrow on the browser sucks now.

I think the biggest fix in 2.1 is the headphone/speaker issue. I can finally listen to music privately on my touchpad!
