Try Dice Player (Ads version). If your NAS supports FTP or SMB then combine with ES File Explorer to open the files.

Thanks. Its kind of weird to use two desperate Apps for it, bug it does work. Wish ES did NFS

It doesn't look like the toucpad is quite ready for HD playing off a NAS yet. I wonder if its a hardware issue or bandwidth issue. Need to copy one of the files to the TouchPad and see what happens locally.

Strange. I can play 1080p mkv's with subtitles just fine using that combo.

Yeah, I've tried both my wifi networks and have tried playing 1080p movies, 1080i TV shows and a 720p TV show and they're all bad. I've never had a problem playing the 720p stuff with Player on the iPad. I know we're still in Alpha so I wasn't expecting it to work but its strange that your would play it and mine not.

Is it normal for the Android browser to stop playing audio if you switch to a different tab, switch to a different app or have the browser open and turn the screen off?

You're running Alpha2 right? And did you wipe before installing it?

I know the ES+Dice combo works because it was recommended by other people and then I tried it to find it working also.

Now, there are some encodes that won't work on the Touchpad in HW mode (like 10bit encodes) but many should work.

Yeah, this is a function of the browser not Android itself. When the browser detects it's been put in the background, it shuts everything down to save power. Right now all the browsers do it like that.

I am on the latest nightly build. I didn't wipe before I upgraded from .6.

That's a real bummer about the browser. I was used to starting an audio stream in Safari an being able to at least turn the screen off and have the audio keep going. Is it just the ICS browser? I guess I can try Dolphin.

EDIT: Dolphin does it to. Guess it must be an underlying thing in the OS. Bummer. That iPad 3 can't come soon enough at this point.

Ah, that's the problem. The Nightly build hasn't implemented Alpha2's HW acceleration.

No. I just said that the current browsers are, by design, doing that, not the OS itself. Dolphin is just a GUI on top of the stock renderer so it really never does anything differently from stock.

So is it safe to jump in the water with Alpha 2? How's hardware acceleration? I am still on CM7. Tried CM9 without acceleration and it was a dog.

Try Opera Mobile. I've had success doing what you're trying to do using it.

I'd say CM9 is further ahead than CM7 now. You know how Youtube videos don't show up in portrait mode in CM7 (actually it's rendering on the bottom half of the screen behind the comments but that's basically no video)? That's no problem in CM9 and it's perfectly smooth. Even 1080p decode works better in CM9 than it ever did in CM7 for me (even on Xron).

However, the wifi issues still remain. Battery life, while decent, is still worse than WebOS. There's also a bug where if you're signed into Google Talk, the standby battery life is notably worse.

I had wifi issues as well in CM7. The combination of CM9 and changing my wireless channel from 11 to something lower like <=6 has resolved my issues.

I installed it on mine now that hardware video acceleration works. A friend showed me how fast the browser was in alpha1, so once hardware acceleration was fixed I gave it a try... it works fine for what I want. I'm pretty locked in to iOS apps right now so we'll see what happens over the next few weeks. The webOS multitasking is so nice I'll need to see appreciable benefit to actually switch.

It took me embarrassingly long to find the web browser

best launcher for CM9 (besides stock)? ADW EX? It's nice but I'm always annoyed at the lack of polish for some things (like why its so sensitive to a flick... i can't even use scrolling widgets without accidentally flipping to the next homescreen)

Yep. You can play music/audio using any music program and have it work while the screen is off or you're in other programs, but you can't have audio play from an internet window if you close the browser or change tabs. It's a limitation of the browser/OS right now.

Nova Launcher is the best atm.

I'd say battery life is worse than cm7. Wifi sleep fails to wake back up. Neither could top the standby of webOS.

But I'd still use cm9 over anything, heh. Manually controlling wifi for now, helps some.

Since I'm the one known as the guy who bitches about battery, its not AS bad now... But then again maybe its because they fixed the Wifi drivers so it actually turns off. I have it turn on only when plugged in/screen on.

So it seems my Touchpad has managed to turn off Wifi in these 2 days, and I lost 15% over 2 days. Now my iPad 2 probably would've been like 5% loss or less over 2 days with ongoing notifications. I should probably test the TouchPad with wifi constantly on, but I bet the battery will drain pretty badly.

Will leave wifi on tonight and report back how it does in 12 hrs.

I thought I had read that the Alpha 2 HW improvements had made it in to the nighties a few days ago, but I guess not. I flashed back to Alpha 2 and it works better. Not smooth, per se, but a lot better.

I guess I'm just a little disappointed in the overall usability. I know it's supposed to be Alpha and we're running an OS that was never intended to run on this hardware anyways but things just seem so wrong. The web browser, which should be something that works perfectly, is slow and jittery. It's definitely not a replacement for the fluid experience of an iPad. Looking forward to Wednesday, haha.
