CM9 alpha 1 is out.

http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18843-releasealpha1-cyanogenmod-9-touchpad/
Alpha 1 Release notes:

We finally have hardware video decode working largely thanks to some help from yjwong. This release is primarily just to get hardware decoding out for folks to enjoy while other work continues. This build does not work with Netflix yet. However, hardware accelerated video decoding does work for Youtube HD and playback of local media. This build still uses the 2.6.35 kernel. The 3.0 kernel is still being heavily worked on and is also the primary focus for development. Don't expect hardware video decoding to be perfect yet. Its half a miracle it works at all on our current kernel.

Similar to the last build I will provide flashable zips to make it easier to switch to lcd density 120 with proper launcher layout. The hardware video decoding will not make it into the nightlies for a few days. There is still some work to do in order to get it merged into repositories and ensure it doesn't break other devices.

  • Hardware video decoding support. As a result, Youtube HD and 720p and 1080p local media will now be playable. Netflix does not work yet.
  • Includes touchscreen improvements by Dees_Troy
  • Now able to enable use of 2D companion core to offload composition

Workaround for pixelated videos.

It seems that Alpha 1 had the same problem as CM7 when using c2d - videos get scaled using nearest neighbor instead of Bicubic, Bilinear or whichever method Android normally uses.

This can be fixed by changing this line in the build.prop:

debug.composition.type=c2d > debug.composition.type=gpu

Can't wait to get home and try this out. Too bad about Netflix for those who want that but I'm sure it'll come eventually.

Sweet! After changing the composition type everything is humming right along.

How easy is it to update? I think I have .6 right now, and I've never been sure if I can perform a .zip update (via I think ClockWorkMod?) or just do a full reinstall.

I've been installing it via ACMEInstaller2 with no problems. It just installs over the previous version, so nothing gets wiped.

Wow, upgraded from 0.5 to latest KANG release and the gapps 20120215. Was able to install some apps via Google Market. Angry Birds Rio, Droid Comic Viewer, and Aldiko. Nice upgrade that nonHD YouTube works. Now to look for files that can play my 720p (mkv) files.

Previous settings on 0.5 was still there.

Assuming you meant a player that can play your 720p mkv files, you can try MX Player or BS Player both of which are free (with ads though).

I believe that I have a mkv/avi/mpeg player on a android device (Arnova 10b), thus my questions on copying them to the TP on previous postings. I'll have to find it and see what that app was. Glad that this TP is still being developed as an Android, since I was a skeptic on its usefulness when the August fire sale began. Hopefully all the "bugs" will/can be fixed and probably run like the Asus Transformer Prime.

Good heavens that was fast.

Edit: Unless you need Netflix or are not already on Alpha 1, you don't need Alpha 2. It's just Netflix support plus the composition fix listed above (they didn't actually fix C2D itself)

PSH. Just Netflix... that's everything!!!

I was skipping Alpha 1 due to none of it, now I'll do Alpha 2 in order to get my Netflix back!

It is more than just Netflix support, it is support for a lot of streaming applications. Alpha 2 is well worth the 5mins it takes to update to it.

If I had gone to Bricked Kernel and now want to switch back to the main stream for alpha 2 how do I get rid of all of the Bricked stuff.

Or will Bricked come out with updates that role in the stuff from alpha 2. I apologize if this is somehow obvious. When I installed Bricked I didn't realize it was a complete alternate I just thought it was additional mods or something...

I believe that all you need to do is first do a wipe in CWM (factory wipe then goto mounts and wipe System).

Then install CM9a2 GAPPS and reboot. There will be a bricked entry in moboot still but just scroll down and choose Cyanogenmod.

Once you've booted into Cyanogenmod and gotten underway in terms of setup, you can simply remove the uimage for Bricked:

http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18960-video-removing-uimage-files-from-android-on-hp-touchpad/

I actually did it differently myself. After I wiped, I ran the remove ALL uimages tool from Classicnerd: http://www.classicnerd.net/Betas/

Then I installed CM9a2 and rebooted.

High power drain compared to WebOS.

If you log out of Google Talk, idle times should be a lot better but in active use, still worse than WebOS.

I get over 6 hours of active use time (as in, screen on the entire time) so that's sufficient but really, 8 hours should be what we're getting.

Ahh could be. I was never able to use webOS for any time without getting frustrated with it and turning the thing off!

WebOS is fine for light tasks but whenever I really want to get down to business, I have to use Android.

Web browsing, PDF reading and eBook reading are what I consider core tablet uses and all three are far more powerful and quick in Android.

Now that video decode acceleration is working in ICS, the last reason I'd boot into WebOS is gone.

However, since the camera isn't working in ICS, I can see why WebOS is still necessary for some Touchpad owners.

How well does alpha 2 play with bricked kernel 0.5? Alpha 1 got stuck in a reboot loop when I tried to run it with 0.5, but it worked fine with 0.35.

You specified alpha 2 Google Apps... are these different than the ones I installed with alpha .6?

Ah, I meant install Cyanogenmod 9 Alpha 2 and then GAPPS version 11.

I would recommend a wipe if you're coming from 0.6

I would avoid Bricked with Alpha1/2 if only because there's some changes that were likely made to make everything work. Bricked will probably have a newer version based off the latest CM9 kernel later.

I did it as an update, and it actually worked fine. It said it went through and optimized programs right after booting, and Mail crashed after that. However, GMail still showed up in my notification area, so I assume it simply came right back?

I could always do a full wipe... it's not too hard to do.
